In the mid-19th century, family lots at Mount Auburn were often decorated in a similar fashion to one’s home or front yard. In addition to monuments, lots were “ornamented” with cast iron furniture, urns, and even statuary. Between 1830 and 1860, more than 1,700 cast and wrought iron fences were added to our landscape. Most were removed by families before the 1900s, replaced by a new preference for granite curbing, and later, to simplify the landscape. Today, only 62 fences…
