About Mount Auburn Cemetery
Mount Auburn Cemetery plays a unique, multi-faceted role within Greater Boston as a vibrant urban green space, active cemetery, public garden, and historic site. A National Historic Landmark, Mount Auburn Cemetery’s 175 acres are open to the public at no cost, 365 days a year, and welcome more than 200,000 visitors annually. Founded in 1831 as America’s first “rural” cemetery, its reputation grew quickly both as a choice for burial by Greater Boston’s leaders, and as a place where the public was encouraged to enjoy natural beauty, attracting locals as well as tourists from around the world. Today, Mount Auburn is redefining what it means to be a historic landscape and cemetery in the twenty-first century.
