Improvements to Bigelow Chapel Lawn Coming this Summer

Friends of Mount Auburn April 6, 2026 News & Events

We are delighted to announce that Mount Auburn was awarded a $115,000 Destination Development Capital matching grant from the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism (MOTT) to support electrical infrastructure on the lawn opposite our historic Bigelow Chapel. The addition of permanent in-ground power and lighting around this prominent outdoor gathering space will expand the Cemetery's ability to host high-quality public and private events without relying on disruptive temporary power solutions.

Building on the success of recent electrical infrastructure improvements at Hazel Dell—which has hosted a variety of art installations, performances, and workshops since its completion in 2023—this project aligns with our long-term vision to offer inclusive, accessible, and environmentally responsible programming across our 175-acre National Historic Landmark site.

Project timeline:

Construction start: April 16, 2026

Project completion: June 30, 2026
