Mount Auburn Book Club: “Harriet Jacobs: A Life” by Jean Yellin

In this biography, Harriet Jacobs: A Life (2003), Jean F. Yellinrecounts the years Jacobs spent hiding in her grandmother’s attic from her sexually abusive owner as well as her escape to freedom and her later years in Cambridge. Harriet Jacobs is buried on Clethra Path.

Each month, the Mount Auburn Book Club meets to discuss a selected work related to one of Mount Auburn’s many facets. Selections range from books on history, natural history, horticulture, art, architecture, preservation, and wildlife to books written by or about those now buried and commemorated here. Bulfinch’s Mythology is a collection of prose recounting of myths and stories from three eras: Greek and Roman mythologyKing Arthur legends and medieval romances. Written by Thomas Bulfinch and named after him, it was published after his death in 1867. Bulfinch is buried on Bellwort Path.

Bernard Malamud’s second novel, The Assistant (1957), is the story of Morris Bober, a grocer in postwar Brooklyn, who wants better for himself and his family. Malamud is buried on Azalea Path.
