DESCRIPTION:Head to Auburn Lake on Sunday\, July 27th from 10am-4pm to take home a customized\, improv poem by current Artist-in-Residence Emily Duggan! (Emily will go on a 1-hour lunch break from 12-1pm.) \nNo registration needed. \n“Mount Auburn Cemetery: Memory Poems”  \n“Mount Auburn Cemetery: Memory Poems” invites visitors to explore and preserve their memories of Mount Auburn through poetry written for them on the spot. Throughout the year\, Emily will be stationed in different locations at the Cemetery\, where visitors will be invited to share with her their stories\, feelings\, connections to\, and memories of Mount Auburn. Emily will then write customized/improvised poems based on these stories\, and visitors will be gifted a copy of the original piece. To further preserve and share the poems\, Emily will design a self-guided audio walking tour and map by which future visitors may listen to recordings of the poems as they move through the Cemetery. DESCRIPTION:An outdoor Guided Meditation\, Relaxation and Sound Experience.  \n\n\nSound Healing practitioner Marlene Boyette welcomes all to be held by the earth\, to find refuge\, to rest\, and to be led through a guided meditation intended to bring the mind and the body into unison\, while also engaging the senses. This first-time event will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II\, and serve as a space for peace\, healing\, hope\, and togetherness. \nJoin us for a complimentary\, public gathering from 5:30pm-6:30pm in the Asa Gray Garden featuring powerful performances by Eden Rayz\, Lonnie Stanton\, and Naoko Brown. A Gingko Tree that will be planted on our grounds will be presented\, and Mount Auburn Cemetery President\, Matthew Stephens\, will provide remarks. \nFrom 6:30pm-7:30pm\, join us for a ticketed reception featuring light refreshments and wine/beer on Bigelow Lawn. An art exhibit of works by Cannon Hersey\, a renowned photographer\, fine artist\, filmmaker and organizer of large-scale cultural efforts will be on display. He is the grandson of John Hersey\, author of Hiroshima. \nFrom 7:30pm-9:00pm\, Cannon Hersey and Collaborator of Future Memory\, Akira Fujimoto\, will deliver a keynote presentation followed by a Q&A session. DESCRIPTION:Participants will be guided through an hour-long musical meditation led by 25-26 Artist-in-Residence Lia Pikus. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nDeep Listening encourages us to drop into presence with ourselves and with others. This practice (described by composer Pauline Oliveros as “listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear”) can become a way of being in a new kind of relation to ourselves and our environments. Through this multi-sensory practice of attunement to sound\, stillness\, breath and movement\, Deep Listening can help foster profound experiences of emotional catharsis and processing. \nIn this Deep Listening experience\, participants will be guided through an hour-long musical meditation led by 25-26 Artist-in-Residence Lia Pikus. In the quiet comfort of Mount Auburn’s Hazel Dell\, Lia will use her cello and loop pedal^ to guide participants through a Deep Listening ritual that will help to foster our relationship with impermanence through attunement to the natural world. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, blanket\, pillow\, or anything else you can sit or lay on comfortably. By drawing and reflecting on natural processes\, Lia seeks to help audiences make emotional and sensory connections with their environments. As a Thomas J. Watson fellow (2023)\, she researched this connective power on a global scale\, exploring the role of art in fostering community around the world. Through a series of suspended Fabriano paper flowers\, still life paintings and media objects\, Gabs envisions future ecosystems shaped by natural cycles\, climate change\, technological advance and human presence. \nInspired by a moment of wonder while walking through Mount Auburn with her family—when thousands of migrating tadpoles overtook the pathways—Gabs explores how the ground itself holds memory\, energy\, and renewal. The installation transforms the chapel into a poetic environment where the earth’s continual process of decay and rebirth becomes visible. \nBlending classical painting traditions with contemporary digital techniques\, Prophecies of the Land invites reflection on our relationship with nature and time. She claims her education started after college in 2015 thought collaborations\, residencies and studio experimentation in London\, UK. She currently lives between Boston\, MA and UK. Her work has been exhibited at Watou Art Festival 2023 (BE)\, Silvermine Art Centre (US)\, Vertical Crypto Art (Metaverse)\, Onstream Gallery (IT)\, Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop (UK) among others. In 2014\, Gabs was awarded with the European Research of New Creative Spaces in new media\, and the Revelation Artist Prize Mayte Spinola in 2019. In that same year\, Gabs was recognised by Arteninformado through her inclusion on their list of ‘The 12 artist focus on the next generation’. \nIn 2023 she is showing a 13ft painting at Watou Art Festival 2023 commissioned by the government of Poperinge (BE). Her work Possibly Maybe is Shortlister for the National Prize Show 2023\, at Cambridge Art Association\, and she is the winner of the Finalist edition of Teravarna Award in Landscape. And her work “Ninfas’ Secrets” was exhibited at QUEERwerks in Silvermine Art Centre (CT). \nPrevious solo exhibitions were “Blending Boundaires” (Rome)\, “error” (London\, 2020)\, Unit 1 Gallery|Workshop\, “Daring Forest” (Madrid\, 2018)\, and “Goodies Boobies” (Madrid\, 2018). \nSelected for residencies “The Columbia Residency” with Roman Road Gallery (London\, 2021) and “Sommer Atelier Aschersleben” (Germany 2021)\, Unit 1 Radical Residency® IV (London\, 2019) and “Paradise AIR” for solo Art Residency (Tokyo\, 2018). Through a series of suspended Fabriano paper flowers\, still life paintings and media objects\, Gabs envisions future ecosystems shaped by natural cycles\, climate change\, technological advance and human presence. \nInspired by a moment of wonder while walking through Mount Auburn with her family—when thousands of migrating tadpoles overtook the pathways—Gabs explores how the ground itself holds memory\, energy\, and renewal. The installation transforms the chapel into a poetic environment where the earth’s continual process of decay and rebirth becomes visible. \nBlending classical painting traditions with contemporary digital techniques\, Prophecies of the Land invites reflection on our relationship with nature and time. If you reserve a free ticket then that will help us gauge the interest in the event. \n… \nJuls Gabs is a 25-26 Artist in Residence at Mount Auburn Cemetery. \nJuls Gabs (born 1989\, San Sebastián) is a Spanish artist working in Painting and Digital. She claims her education started after college in 2015 thought collaborations\, residencies and studio experimentation in London\, UK. She currently lives between Boston\, MA and UK. Her work has been exhibited at Watou Art Festival 2023 (BE)\, Silvermine Art Centre (US)\, Vertical Crypto Art (Metaverse)\, Onstream Gallery (IT)\, Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop (UK) among others. In 2014\, Gabs was awarded with the European Research of New Creative Spaces in new media\, and the Revelation Artist Prize Mayte Spinola in 2019. In that same year\, Gabs was recognised by Arteninformado through her inclusion on their list of ‘The 12 artist focus on the next generation’. \nIn 2023 she is showing a 13ft painting at Watou Art Festival 2023 commissioned by the government of Poperinge (BE). Her work Possibly Maybe is Shortlister for the National Prize Show 2023\, at Cambridge Art Association\, and she is the winner of the Finalist edition of Teravarna Award in Landscape. And her work “Ninfas’ Secrets” was exhibited at QUEERwerks in Silvermine Art Centre (CT). \nPrevious solo exhibitions were “Blending Boundaires” (Rome)\, “error” (London\, 2020)\, Unit 1 Gallery|Workshop\, “Daring Forest” (Madrid\, 2018)\, and “Goodies Boobies” (Madrid\, 2018). \nSelected for residencies “The Columbia Residency” with Roman Road Gallery (London\, 2021) and “Sommer Atelier Aschersleben” (Germany 2021)\, Unit 1 Radical Residency® IV (London\, 2019) and “Paradise AIR” for solo Art Residency (Tokyo\, 2018). Exhibited works in art fairs like “(un)fair Milano” (IT 2023)\, SCOPE (Miami Beach\, 2018) and JustMad8 (Madrid\, 2017) \nShe had a commission by Aston Martin F1 in 2022 and her work constitutes part of Private Permanent Collections such as Lycee Moliere (Brussels\, Belgium)\, Merode’s Castle (Gmünd\, Austria)\, Palast Hohenems (Austria) Milton Keynes Arts Center (Milton Keynes\, UK)\, Contemporary Museum Mayte Spinola (Marmolejo\, Spain). \nHer work has been published in media channels like 99 Future Blue Chip Artists\, Aston Martin F1\, FAD Magazine\, London Arts Events\, Assemblage Magazine\, Image.ie (2020) and Arteinformado\, Ultima Hora Mallorca (2019).

SUMMARY:Deep Listening Ritual with Artist in Residence Lia Pikus
DESCRIPTION:Participants will be guided through an hour-long musical meditation led by 25-26 Artist-in-Residence Lia Pikus.\n\n\n\nDeep Listening encourages us to drop into presence with ourselves and with others. This practice (described by composer Pauline Oliveros as “listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear”) can become a way of being in a new kind of relation to ourselves and our environments. Through this multi-sensory practice of attunement to sound\, stillness\, breath and movement\, Deep Listening can help foster profound experiences of emotional catharsis and processing. \nIn this Deep Listening experience\, participants will be guided through an hour-long musical meditation led by 25-26 Artist-in-Residence Lia Pikus. Lia will use her cello and loop pedal^ to guide participants through a Deep Listening ritual in Bigelow Chapel that will help to foster our relationship with impermanence\, change and grief. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, blanket\, pillow\, or anything else you can sit or lay on comfortably. She is a cellist\, composer\, and illustrator whose practice centers on art’s ability to cultivate experiences of presence and connection\, both within community and in dialogue with the natural world. By drawing and reflecting on natural processes\, Liaseeksto help audiences make emotional and sensory connections with their environments. As a Thomas J. Watson fellow (2023)\, she researched this connective power on a global scale\, exploring the role of art in fostering community around the world. This research formed the foundation for her current explorations in live looping as a form of mediative ritual. It is also the central focus of her debut EP\, Ritual\, released in2024. Lia was an Artist-in-Residence at Shenandoah National Park in 2024 and at Mothership NYC in 2023. DESCRIPTION:Following the model developed by Jon Underwood (based on the ideas of Bernard Crettaz)\, a Death Cafe is an opportunity for people to eat cake\, drink tea\, and discuss death. The goal is to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.” \nAt Mount Auburn’s Death Cafe\, attendees will have the opportunity to speak in small group settings and have organic and meaningful discussions on mortality. SUMMARY:A Writing\, A Reading with Poet & Artist in Residence Emily Duggan
DESCRIPTION:In this two-part poetry event\, participants can head to Asa Gray Garden between 1:00-3:00 PM to take home a customized poem by poet and 2025-26 Artist-in-Residence Emily Duggan. Throughout 2025\, Emily has been stationed at various sites throughout the landscape\, inviting visitors to share their stories\, feelings\, connections to\, and memories of Mount Auburn and writing poems on the spot for guests to take home. This will be Emily’s last day in the landscape as an Artist-in-Residence. \nFrom 3:30-4:15 PM\, participants are invited to join Emily at Bigelow Chapel for a reading of a selection of the (over 50) poems she has written for visitors to the Cemetery during her residency\, followed by a brief Q&A with Cemetery staff. \nGuests are welcomed to attend one or both parts of the event. No registration is required.
