Open Position: Plant Records Internship
The position will provide an opportunity to engage in botanic garden collections management, primarily focusing on tracking plant acquisitions data, labeling the collections, conducting field-checks and taxonomic verifications, and using GPS equipment with digital mapping software.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Horticultural Curator and the Plant Records Manager, the intern will gain experience working with a wide range of plants, and gain an understanding of how technology can be used to support stewardship of an historic landscape with an active horticulture program. The work includes the use of BG-Base and BG-Map software. It may also include preparing interpretive materials for the public that will be used in the Visitors’ Center and on Mount Auburn’s website.
*Knowledge of the basics of botanical nomenclature with a background in horticulture or landscape design.
*Familiarity with the temperate flora (USDA Zone 5-6) of eastern North America and Asia.
*Excellent writing skills
*Valid driver’s license
*Ability to stay organized and communicate successfully with staff, visitors and the general public.
*Must present a good professional image in dress, grooming and personal hygiene per the Cemetery’s dress code policy
REQUIRED PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
*Ability to use a variety of horticultural tools and equipment including handheld power tools.
*Ability to bend, walk and/or stand for long periods of time, and work outside in all seasons and variable weather conditions.
