Open Position: Plant Collections Intern

The position will provide an opportunity to engage in botanic garden collections management, primarily focusing on tracking plant acquisitions data, labeling the collections, conducting field-checks and taxonomic verifications, and using GPS equipment with digital mapping software.

Under the supervision of the Plant Records Manager and the Horticultural Curator, the intern will gain experience working with a wide range of plants, and gain an understanding of how technology can be used to support stewardship of an historic landscape with an active horticulture program. The work includes the use of BG-Base and ESRI mapping software, and participating in botanical photography. It may also include preparing interpretive materials for the public that will be used in the Visitors’ Center and on Mount Auburn’s website.


Verification of plant collections data through field-checking, using tablets and Trimble GPS or EOS Positioning Systems equipment.

Updating records in databases and mapping software.

Producing and installing plant labels as necessary.

Shooting botanical reference photos of the plant species in our collection and the wildlife they attract.

Conducting light digital editing and resizing of photos.

Participating in plant identification and taxonomic reviews as necessary.

Helping streamline the protocols for field-checks and mapping for future use.

Helping refine the on-line plant map on Mount Auburn’s website.

Helping implement a nursery – production inventory system using RFID labels.

As with all Cemetery staff, the apprentice may assist with any cemetery business including special meetings, conferences, Friends events and public programs as needed.

Demonstrate responsible stewardship for the environment when planning and implementing all duties incorporated in job description.


Knowledge of the basics of botanical nomenclature with a background in horticulture or landscape design. 

Familiarity with the temperate flora (USDA Zone 5-6) of eastern North America and Asia.

Detail oriented.

Excellent writing skills.

Valid driver’s license.

Ability to stay organized and communicate successfully with staff, visitors and the general public.

Must present a good professional image in dress, grooming and personal hygiene per the Cemetery’s dress code policy.


Ability to use a variety of horticultural tools and equipment including handheld power tools.

Ability to bend, walk and/or stand for long periods of time, and work outside in all seasons and variable weather conditions.
