Open Position: Horticulture Summer Intern

This position will provide training and experience to a student enrolled in a horticulture program. Mount Auburn will accommodate the following areas of study: Arboriculture, Gardening, Greenhouse/Nursery management, and Sustainable Horticulture practices. The student may have a preferred area of concentration or could rotate thru departments.


*Maintaining Special Area Gardens including: planting, watering, pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing and edging of trees, shrubs and ground covers.

*Maintaining a collection of 5000 trees performing: planting, pruning, removal, cabling, IPM monitoring, tree spraying and injection for disease and pest control.

*Working in the Greenhouse facility and on the grounds performing: planting of bedding plants, watering, weeding, mulching, IPM monitoring, and learning about automated greenhouse systems.

*Other duties may include general grounds maintenance tasks such as tribute removal, limestone application and compost application.

*Responsible for correctly using an automated method (time badges) for the purpose of time and attendance recordkeeping. Employees are only authorized to use their own personal swipe badge.

*May perform any variety of duties as requested by supervisor to maintain or improve the Cemetery

*Must present a good professional image in dress, grooming and personal hygiene per the Cemetery’s dress code policy


*High School Diploma and enrollment in a horticulture program preferred

*Driver’s license required

*Experience with maintenance of trees, shrubs and groundcovers

*Desire and willingness to learn about horticulture

*Ability to work alone or with other members of the Horticulture staff

*Ability to read map of Cemetery grounds

*Ability to communicate successfully with staff, lot owners and visitors


*Ability to shovel soil and mulch, and to lift fertilizer, trees, shrubs, and logs up to 50 pounds

*Ability to use and operate a variety of hand such as hand-pruners, handsaws, pole saw and pole pruners

*Ability to use and operate related power tools and equipment such as utility turf vehicles, tractors, leaf blower, power hedge trimmers, chainsaw and brush chipper

*Ability to bend, walk, and/or stand for long periods of time

*Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions
