Open Position: Gardening Intern

This working position will provide training and practical experience to a student or recent graduate of an accredited horticulture program. The horticulture apprentice will be involved with the maintenance of numerous gardens and establishment of new plantings throughout the cemetery grounds. The work will include planting trees, shrubs, and perennials, weeding, watering and mulching. The apprentice may also be involved with greenhouse work and other grounds maintenance tasks as needed. The apprentice will also participate in safety trainings, educational seminars and field trips when offered.


Maintenance of Special Area Gardens including: planting, watering, pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing and edging of trees, shrubs and groundcovers.

Install new plantings on lots and large-scale renovation projects with the opportunity to learn plant identification and use in the landscape.

Working in the Greenhouse facility and on the grounds performing: planting of bedding plants, watering, weeding, mulching, IPM monitoring, and learning about automated greenhouse systems.

Learn and perform hand pruning techniques on shrubs, perennials and small trees.

Other duties may include general grounds maintenance tasks such as tribute removal, limestone application and compost application.

Responsible for correctly using an automated method (time badges) for the purpose of time and attendance recordkeeping.  Employees are only authorized to use their own personal swipe badge.

May perform any variety of duties as requested by supervisor to maintain or improve the Cemetery.

Must present a good professional image in dress, grooming and personal hygiene per the Cemetery’s dress code policy,

Demonstrate responsible stewardship for the environment when planning and implementing all duties incorporated in job description.


High School Diploma and enrollment in a horticulture program preferred.

Driver’s license required.

Experience with maintenance of trees, shrubs and groundcovers.

Desire and willingness to learn about horticulture.

Ability to work alone or with other members of the Horticulture staff.

Ability to read map of Cemetery grounds.

Ability to communicate successfully with staff, lot owners and visitors.


Ability to shovel soil and mulch, and to lift fertilizer, trees, shrubs, and logs up to 50 pounds.

Ability to use and operate a variety of hand such as hand-pruners, handsaws, pole saw and pole pruners.

Ability to use and operate related power tools and equipment such as utility turf vehicles, tractors, leaf blower and power hedge trimmers.

Ability to bend, walk, and/or stand for long periods of time.

Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
