Open Position: 12-Month Horticultural Apprentice

This position will provide training and experience to a recent graduate or student enrolled in a horticulture program. Mount Auburn will accommodate the following areas of study: Arboriculture, Gardening, Greenhouse/Nursery management, and Sustainable Horticulture practices. The apprentice will rotate through various departments/crews on a monthly basis over the course of a year. The particular interests and skills of the individual may be used to structure the actual rotations and the projects undertaken by the apprentice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*General landscape/grounds maintenance, including: planting, watering, pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing and edging of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants.

*Help to maintain a collection of 5000 trees performing: planting, pruning, removal, cabling, IPM monitoring, tree spraying and injection for disease and pest control.

*Work in the Greenhouse facility and nursery performing a range of tasks in plant production, including propagation: planting of bedding plants, watering, weeding, mulching, IPM monitoring, and learning about automated greenhouse systems. Also includes production of floral tributes (flower arrangements, etc.) for sale through our retail florist service.

*Help with several important horticultural initiatives, such as increasing conifer diversification as a response to Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, exploring ecological sustainability in landscape operations, wildlife habitat enhancement, and historic landscape preservation.

*Work in the Plant Collections department processing plant records, conducting fieldwork for plant inventories, producing and installing plant labels and learning the use of BG-Base/ESRI mapping GIS software.

*Other duties may include general grounds maintenance tasks such as floral tribute removal, snow removal, limestone and compost applications.

*May conduct garden tours for the public and prepare interpretive materials for the Visitor Center or website as needed.

*Responsible for correctly using an automated method (time badges) for the purpose of time and attendance recordkeeping. Employees are only authorized to use their own personal swipe badge.

*May perform any variety of duties as requested by supervisors to maintain or improve the Cemetery

*Must present a good professional image in dress, grooming and personal hygiene per the Cemetery’s dress code policy

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

*Recent degree in college level horticulture program, or enrollment in a horticulture program.

*Driver’s license required

*Experience with maintenance of trees, shrubs and groundcovers

*Experience with computer applications such as database-mapping software (AutoCAD or ESRI), and Excel.

*Desire and willingness to learn about horticulture

*Ability to work alone or with other members of the Horticulture staff

*Ability to read and follow maps of Cemetery grounds

*Ability to communicate successfully with staff, lot owners and visitors

REQUIRED PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

*Ability to shovel soil and mulch, and to lift fertilizer, trees, shrubs, and logs up to 50 pounds

*Ability to use and operate a variety of hand such as hand-pruners, handsaws, pole saw and pole pruners

*Ability to use and operate related power tools and equipment such as utility turf vehicles, tractors, leaf blower, power hedge trimmers, chainsaw and brush chipper

*Ability to bend, walk, and/or stand for long periods of time

*Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions

*Ability to operate computers and work in an office environment.
