SUMMARY:The Return: Eden Rayz and Argent & Sable- A Death Aware Musical Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mount Auburn for a concert that celebrates the third homecoming of the Bigelow Chapel pipe organ* after it was decommissioned by Mount Auburn and reformed by Eden as a new multi-component instrument called Argent and Sable**. \nThe performance includes amplified cello with vocals\, electronics\, and Eden’s band featuring Daniel Gordevich (bass guitar) and AJ Grimes (drums)\, Eden’s original compositions including “Aboriginal Sensible Muchness” which she wrote as her first piece as an artist-in residence\, plus several newer songs inspired by the Cemetery and spending time with her friend Roy Hawes\, the Cemetery’s Operations Manager. \nThe performance will feature a new arco-electroacoustic percussion instrument (2026) created from one of the remaining flute pipes of the Bigelow Chapel organ. \nShe will perform and recite her 2025 musical death awareness meditation “Nox Obscura\,” which explores collective grief\, reinvention\, ritual\, subversion\, and the dark night of the soul. \nAttendees are encouraged to listen\, meditate\, and immerse in the cacophonous sound of Argent & Sable. “The Cemetery Tapes\,” a live performance album recorded in Bigelow Chapel featuring the death meditation “Lux Aeterna” will be available at the event\, plus CDs and other keepsakes.*In October 1924\, a Hook & Hastings pipe organ was installed in Bigelow Chapel as part of an interior renovation by Architects Allen and Collens\, reflecting a return to a more traditional setting for funeral and memorials services. Over the next several decades\, the Cemetery received fewer requests to use the organ for services and the cost of repairs and restoration increased. In December 2022\, the organ was de-accessioned and removed from the Chapel. Today\, only the organ’s altar façade remains. \n**“Argent” refers to the silver color of the principal pipes and “sable” refers to black\, the absence of color worn in mourning. SUMMARY:Ira Klein & Liz Walker- A Music and Dance Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join former Artist-in-Residence Ira Klein and Liz Walker for a music and dance performance in Bigelow Chapel. \n\n\n\n\nIra Klein (2022-2023 Artist-in-Residence) returns to Mount Auburn to celebrate music from his new record\, Solo Guitar. His performance will include compositions inspired by historic oak trees on Mount Auburn’s grounds\, as well as a variety of original and traditional Middle-Eastern music. Special guest dancer/choreographer Liz Walker (2022-2023 Artist-in-Residence) will join the stage to perform select pieces from At The Seam of Life and Death\, Ira and Liz’s collaborative piece. Together\, Walker and Klein playfully explore the beautiful acoustics and space of the majestic Bigelow Chapel\, surrounding the audience with an immersive arts experience. \nLiz Walker is a classically trained ballet dancer and choreographer based in Cambridge. After completing her training at American Ballet Theatre’s school\, she joined Los Angeles Ballet as an inaugural member in 2006. With Los Angeles Ballet she performed as a soloist\, dancing a variety of roles in the classical\, Balanchine\, modern\, and contemporary repertory. As a choreographer\, Walker explores personal lived experience through movement. She uses dance as a vehicle for social commentary and change while emphasizing the medium’s strength as the embodiment of music. Walker was a 2022-2023 Artist-in-Residence at Mount Auburn Cemetery and has returned to Mount Auburn often to create and perform. She lives in Cambridge with her husband and two young children. \nIra Klein is a Brooklyn based guitarist\, composer\, and educator. Specializing in Middle-Eastern music\, American folk\, and music for dance\, he seamlessly combines a lifelong passion for musical traditions with a love of experimentation. SUMMARY:LETTING GO: A Meditative Walk and Chair Yoga Class at Auburn Lake
DESCRIPTION: Join former Artist-in-Residence Lonnie Stanton for a mindful workshop at Auburn Lake.\n\n\n\n\nJoin former Artist-in-Residence Lonnie Stanton for a meditative walk and chair yoga class at Mount Auburn. This adult workshop is rooted in yoga\, initiating movement through intentional breathwork. All bodies are welcome. You will explore the gorgeous natural setting with a warming walk to the lake. As you travel along Indian Ridge\, participants will be prompted to mindfully take in the autumn views\, allowing the falling foliage to inspire you to: let go. \nLetting go of what is not serving us and what is out of our control is the goal. As you arrive at the green along Auburn lake\, chairs will be set up for a chair yoga class. \nThe chair allows a great view to gaze upon the lake as Lonnie guides participants through this moving meditation. The class will center generous exhales and prompt you to release unnecessary tension in the body and mind. The return walk to the chapel provides opportunity for reflection\, considering what small practice could stay with you and remind you to let go. \nPlease note that this workshop will meet at and return to Story Chapel. \n… \nLonnie has taught chair yoga for 9 years weekly. Throughout their 30s as an active dancer\, she has felt the benefits of this gentle practice and feels it is beneficial for many ages and mobilities. \nA note from Lonnie: “As a past artist in residence who choreographed a dance tour around Auburn Lake\, I grew to know this corner of the cemetery quite well. It feels like a second home. I am thrilled for the opportunity to return and share my love of this path with others. Autumn is such a stunning time in New England.
