SUMMARY:Sense & Sensuality: Writing with the Five Senses
DESCRIPTION:“I am not an intellectual\, I write with my body\,” wrote Clarice Lispector in 1977. \nWhat is it to write with the body? What is it to drop out of the brain and into bowels (or lower) and write from there? How can we channel our senses to enliven our writing? And how do we access the deeper\, darker\, messier\, and more physical places and bring them to the page?  \n\n\nIn this workshop\, led by award-winning author and memoirist Nina MacLaughlin\, in the charged space of the cemetery and through a series of exercises focusing on the senses\, we’ll practice engaging the whole body in our writing. Letting our brains step out of the way\, we’ll explore how bringing taste\, touch\, smell\, sight\, sound to the work — and how they mingle with the mind — can richen and deepen not only your writing\, but how you move through the world. Participants will learn how to use the body to create rich and sensual writing in any genre. \n\n\nThe workshop will take place in the Bigelow Chapel glass wing. Check in will take place at Bigelow Chapel.  \n\n\nEvent Capacity: 15 people \nREGISTER NOW >>\n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free access to all our public programs and discounts on special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. Our robust roster of programs each year is made possible by the generous support of our donors and in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. \nFor inquiries about accessibility\, to request an accommodation\, or if you have any questions about your membership\, please contact friends@mountauburn.org.

SUMMARY:An (Un)common Inheritance: The Beauty & Wonder of Mount Auburn's Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:“…It is the duty of the living thus to provide for the dead. It is not a mere office of pious regard for others; but it comes home to our own bosoms\, as those who are soon to enter upon the common inheritance.” ~Joseph Story\, Mount Auburn Cemetery Consecration address\, 1831 \nFor nearly two hundred years\, Mount Auburn Cemetery has been a cradle of invariable death and vibrant life. A thoughtfully humanized ecosystem\, the landscape is sculpted and cared for by staff and volunteers who preserve the Cemetery’s natural wonders for both the living and the dead. \nAn (Un)common Inheritance is the story of a place where little brown bats and yellow-spotted salamanders roam on wet spring nights\, where busy pollinators buzz between the flowers and toads sing at the edges of the ponds\, where Horticulture staff tend to thousands of trees and plants\, and where volunteers study the land as it slips through the seasons. \nJoin Mount Auburn Artist-in-Residence Billy Hickey as he takes you on an outdoor photographic journey through an exhibition of his photos placed throughout the grounds that showcase the vibrant Cemetery ecosystem. After the tour\, we will meet in Story Chapel for a brief Q&A with the artist. \nCheck-in on Bigelow Chapel Lawn \nCapacity: 35 people (per day) \nREGISTER NOW >>

SUMMARY:Summer SOLSTICE: Healing Nature Mandala
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Elisabeth Gerald as she guides the Mount Auburn community and all Summer SOLSTICE participants in a healing Nature Mandala made from natural objects found at the Cemetery. \nAlso known as Land Art or Environmental Art\, Earth Art is made from organic materials found in nature like stones\, branches\, leaves\, flowers\, feathers\, pinecones\, etc. Creating a Nature Mandala (aka an Earth Art Mandala) is a meditative and often collaborative practice intended to connect you to the environment. \nMandalas\, meaning “circle” in Sanskrit\, are Buddhist devotional images that represent wholeness and are seen as a symbol for infinite connection signifying the transformation from suffering into joy. We hope that creating this Nature Mandala is a unifying and healing experience for all who participate and that it will awaken your imagination and appreciation for the natural world. \nCome see the finished Nature Mandala between 6:30pm and 7:00pm at Bigelow Chapel Lawn. \n*No check-in required. The event registration is simply for us to gauge interest and attendance.* \nRegister Now >>

SUMMARY:Summer SOLSTICE: Intro to Cyanotypes
DESCRIPTION:Cyanotypes are one of the oldest photographic printing processes in the history of photography. The distinctive feature of the print is its shade of cyan blue\, which results from its exposure to ultraviolet light. \nCyanotypes were first introduced by the astronomer\, scientist\, and botanist John Herschel in 1841. The cyanotype process was later used by botanist Anna Atkins Atkins to make the first ever photographic book in 1843. \nJoin former Artist-in-Residence Madge Evers (2022-2023) for a workshop on how to make your own cyanotype compositions. Evers will teach participants an experimental form of the cyanotype process by which she will create a series of images on paper that use and depict the flora of Mount Auburn Cemetery. \nCheck-in for the workshop will be outside Bigelow Chapel. \nRegister Now >>\nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free access to all our public programs and discounts on special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. SUMMARY:Summer SOLSTICE: Deep Listening Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join 2023 Winter SOLSTICE Thought Artist\, Deb Todd Wheeler for a deep listening tour of the Mount Auburn grounds. \nWalking and Listening: an invitation to consider the Solstice’s mix. \nAt this solstice moment\, the earth’s tilt toward the sun reaches its peak\, and we celebrate the end of New England springtime energy with a much needed pause. This session aims to nourish our ears\, and invite our bodies to soak in the sounds of the solstice’s mix: bird calls\, car horns\, our own thoughts\, trees in the wind. Drawing from the work of sound composer Pauline Oliveros\, this session will engage in a series of Deep Listening exercises to prepare the body for walking and listening. \nCheck-in for the tour will be outside Bigelow Chapel. \nRegister Now >>\nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free access to all our public programs and discounts on special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn.
SUMMARY:Moving Through Grief to Gratitude
DESCRIPTION:“Gratitude and grief may seem to be in tension with one another\, but gratitude and loss are inseparable. Awareness of what is present calls forth what is absent.” –Oren Jay Sofer \nLed by dancer and Artist-in-Residence Lonnie Stanton\, this adult workshop is rooted in yoga\, initiating movement through intentional breathwork. Using somatic* movement techniques\, we will gain full-body awareness that focuses on your internal physical experience. All bodies are welcome! \nMovement and exercise have been known to ease tension in the body and relieve pain. Using simple physical movements and gestures\, we will gently release and exhale what weighs on us and inhale gratitude through the body. With time we will settle on mats or in chairs\, and focus on more traditional yoga sequencing. \nREGISTER NOW >>\nPlease wear clothes you are comfortable moving in and bring a mat or towel to sit on. We will have folding chairs available for those who would like to use them. Check-in will be outside Story Chapel and we will travel as a group to the workshop location at Auburn Lake. \nEvent Capacity: 15 people \nCheck-in at Story Chapel \n*Somatic movement is a gentle\, mindful\, and body-oriented practice that involves being present during movement in order to feel more connected to your body. It focuses on the internal experience and feelings connected to movement rather than pushing your body to move in a certain way. \n… \nLonnie Stanton (she/her\, they/them)\, dancer/choreographer \nLonnie Anela O’kalani Neff Stanton is a proud native Hawaiian based in Boston. She is a professional dancer\, dance educator\, and certified yoga instructor. She currently performs with Jean Appolon Expressions\, Peter DiMuro\, Lynn Modell\, and Continuum Dance. Formerly\, she worked as a performer and teacher for 10 years with Prometheus Dance. Lonnie is passionate about sharing dance in unconventional\, often outdoor spaces where a broad audience can be reached. In 2022\, she was awarded the Live Arts Boston Grant with The Click for her site-responsive augmented reality dance installation\, Emotive Land. In 2021\, she choreographed auditory movement maps for American Repertory Theater’s Arboretum Experience.
