DESCRIPTION:An outdoor Guided Meditation\, Relaxation and Sound Experience.  \n\n\nSound Healing practitioner Marlene Boyette welcomes all to be held by the earth\, to find refuge\, to rest\, and to be led through a guided meditation intended to bring the mind and the body into unison\, while also engaging the senses. Weaving together the sounds\, vibrations\, and energy of our natural surroundings with a variety of instruments (including deeply resonant crystal and metal singing bowls and chimes)\, participants will be bathed in layered sonic acoustics.  \n\n\nThe experience will close with an opportunity for all to reflect and set intentions for the new season through dialogue and / or journaling.  \n\n\nWhat to bring: a yoga mat\, blanket or towel\, a journal\, and writing utensil. DESCRIPTION:Join 2023-2024 Artist-in-Residence Eden Rayz for a death-aware musical performance that celebrates the 100th Anniversary homecoming of the Bigelow Chapel pipe organ* after it was decommissioned by Mount Auburn and reformed by Eden as a new multi-component instrument called Argent and Sable**. Performed alongside the cello with vocals\, electronics\, and percussionist Austin Birdy\, Eden’s original compositions\, “Aboriginal Sensible Muchness” and the world-premier of “Lux Aeterna” (“Eternal Light”) will explore collective grief\, reinvention\, ritual\, and the abstraction of time.   \n\n\nAttendees are encouraged to listen\, meditate\, and even participate as vocalists (no experience necessary). The one-hour performance will be recorded live\, and attendees may pre-order Eden’s limited-release album\, The Cemetery Tapes\, at the event with an exclusive QR code.   \n\n\n*In October 1924\, a Hook & Hastings pipe organ was installed in Bigelow Chapel as part of an interior renovation by Architects Allen and Collens\, reflecting a return to a more traditional setting for funeral and memorials services. Over the next several decades\, the Cemetery received fewer requests to use the organ for services and the cost of repairs and restoration increased. In December 2022\, the organ was de-accessioned and removed from the Chapel. As a session cellist\, she has recorded and performed with bands including Moon Tooth and Third Eye Blind\, and improvised on soundtracks including the 2023 Grammy-winning Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök. Her solo flute works have been performed at Carnegie (Weill) Recital Hall and her chamber works have premiered at Musiikkitalo in Helsinki\, Finland and in Cortona\, Italy. SUMMARY:Sense & Sensuality: Writing with the Five Senses
DESCRIPTION:“I am not an intellectual\, I write with my body\,” wrote Clarice Lispector in 1977. \nWhat is it to write with the body? What is it to drop out of the brain and into bowels (or lower) and write from there? How can we channel our senses to enliven our writing? And how do we access the deeper\, darker\, messier\, and more physical places and bring them to the page?  \n\n\nIn this workshop\, led by award-winning author and memoirist Nina MacLaughlin\, in the charged space of the cemetery and through a series of exercises focusing on the senses\, we’ll practice engaging the whole body in our writing. Letting our brains step out of the way\, we’ll explore how bringing taste\, touch\, smell\, sight\, sound to the work — and how they mingle with the mind — can richen and deepen not only your writing\, but how you move through the world. DESCRIPTION:In this therapeutic art workshop\, participants will be guided in creating a personal\, portable shrine to honor and remember a lost loved one. We’ll use small boxes or tins to memorialize and honor things we hold dear to us (e.g. a loved one\, a pet\, our ancestors\, a special community member\, or a place).  \n\n\nThe workshop will provide participants with an arts-based experience that focuses on creating an open and supportive space for us to explore grief and loss free of shame\, to honor who/what we’ve lost\, and to experience a sense of belonging\, validation\, and community support.  \n\n\nAll necessary art materials will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Join artist Elisabeth Gerald as she guides the Mount Auburn community and all Summer SOLSTICE participants in a healing Nature Mandala made from natural objects found at the Cemetery. \nAlso known as Land Art or Environmental Art\, Earth Art is made from organic materials found in nature like stones\, branches\, leaves\, flowers\, feathers\, pinecones\, etc. Creating a Nature Mandala (aka an Earth Art Mandala) is a meditative and often collaborative practice intended to connect you to the environment. \nMandalas\, meaning “circle” in Sanskrit\, are Buddhist devotional images that represent wholeness and are seen as a symbol for infinite connection signifying the transformation from suffering into joy. DESCRIPTION:Cyanotypes are one of the oldest photographic printing processes in the history of photography. The distinctive feature of the print is its shade of cyan blue\, which results from its exposure to ultraviolet light. \nCyanotypes were first introduced by the astronomer\, scientist\, and botanist John Herschel in 1841. The cyanotype process was later used by botanist Anna Atkins Atkins to make the first ever photographic book in 1843. \nJoin former Artist-in-Residence Madge Evers (2022-2023) for a workshop on how to make your own cyanotype compositions. SUMMARY:Summer SOLSTICE: Sound Meditation
DESCRIPTION:An outdoor Guided Meditation\, Relaxation and Sound Experience. \nSound Healing practitioner Marlene Boyette welcomes all to be held by the earth\, to find refuge\, to rest\, and to be led through a guided meditation intended to bring the mind and the body into unison\, while also engaging the senses. Weaving together the sounds\, vibrations\, and energy of our natural surroundings with a variety of instruments (including deeply resonant crystal and metal singing bowls and chimes)\, participants will be bathed in layers sonic acoustics. \nThe experience will close with an opportunity for all to reflect and set intentions for the new season through dialogue and / or journaling. \nWhat to bring: a yoga mat\, blanket or towel\, a journal\, and writing utensil. A limited amount of chairs will be provided. \nCheck-in for the class will be at the Central Ave entrance to Hazel Dell (i.e. Hazel Dell Path). SUMMARY:Summer SOLSTICE: Intro to Cyanotypes
DESCRIPTION:Cyanotypes are one of the oldest photographic printing processes in the history of photography. The distinctive feature of the print is its shade of cyan blue\, which results from its exposure to ultraviolet light. \nCyanotypes were first introduced by the astronomer\, scientist\, and botanist John Herschel in 1841. The cyanotype process was later used by botanist Anna Atkins Atkins to make the first ever photographic book in 1843. \nJoin former Artist-in-Residence Madge Evers (2022-2023) for a workshop on how to make your own cyanotype compositions.
