Its founding\, in 1831\, influenced the expansion of garden cemeteries\, the future development of landscape architecture\, and the national park movement. \nThis tour will include visits to the Asa Gray Garden\, Consecration Dell\, and the monuments of Jacob Bigelow\, Margaret Fuller\, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Expect to enhance your understanding of the cemetery’s rich history\, and learn how the study of botany\, transcendentalism\, and environmental neuroscience has helped us to understand the ways that nature sustains and inspires us. \nTour Guide: Barry J. Kahn \nBarry J. Kahn is one of twenty volunteer docents who staff the Welcome Center at Mount Auburn Cemetery. SUMMARY:Conversations: Above and Beneath\, An Ode to Women Artists
DESCRIPTION:Detritus dance performs a site-responsive dance installation in dialogue with women artists in Mount Auburn’s landscape\, past and present. \n\n\n\n\nDetritus dance activates the landscape of Mount Auburn Cemetery through a site-responsive\, roaming contemporary dance installation entitled “Conversations: Above and Beneath.”  Inspired by Margaret Fuller Ossoli’s “Conversations”\, a series of assemblies between 1839-1844 of Bostonian women who sought alternate means of education when it was formally denied to them\, our “movement salon” pays homage to the radical 19th-century Bostonian women artists of significance in Mount Auburn’s burial grounds. Our performance interweaves the connected narratives of writer Margaret Fuller Ossoli; poet Maria White Lowell; actor Charlotte Cushman; sculptor Edmonia Lewis; and historian Hannah Adams. We seek to bring these women’s stories into dialogue with our own across place and time\, and in doing so help to reshape the ways we publicly memorialize women’s stories. \nThis performance will make stops at: Maria White Lowell’s gravesite\, the Hygeia Statue\, Hannah Adam’s gravesite; Margaret Fuller Ossoli’s cenotaph\, and Hazel Dell. \nAttendees are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. Accessible accommodations will be provided. \nAbout the Artists-in-Residence:  \nDetritus dance is a company focused on embodied storytelling through dance and multidisciplinary performance. Founded in 2021 by Caroline Bradbury and Claire Lane\, we are a queer and women-led organization who strive to amplify intersectional feminist and queer narratives through our work. Detritus is defined as “a product of disintegration\, destruction\, or wearing away.” Our name alludes to how we activate our performance by incorporating elements of visual collage and writing in our research process. As dance is inherently ephemeral\, our performances grapple with the ways in which we demand permanence for queer and feminist histories. We strive to create work that provides social commentaries advocating for the rights of women and gender expansive people. \nDetritus dance has presented original work throughout venues in Medford\, Somerville\, Cambridge\, Salem\, and Jamaica Plain. We have taught all-levels community workshops in partnership with José Mateo Ballet Theater and Connexions United Methodist Church\, and professional classes with Urbanity Dance Company and Midday Movement Series. DESCRIPTION:Join historian Richard Smith for a lecture in Story Chapel on Henry David Thoreau and notable figures in Mount Auburn.\n\n\n\nHenry David Thoreau was one of the most important and influential writers of the 19th Century. And while he isn’t buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery\, he was well acquainted with many of the literary and political figures who are. \nJoin Concord historian Richard Smith for a presentation about Henry Thoreau and some of his famous friends. The “Hermit of Walden Pond” wasn’t such a hermit after all. Longfellow\, Charles Sumner and Margaret Fuller are just some of the notable figures who are buried here that Thoreau knew and associated with. This adult workshop is rooted in yoga\, initiating movement through intentional breathwork. All bodies are welcome. You will explore the gorgeous natural setting with a warming walk to the lake. As you travel along Indian Ridge\, participants will be prompted to mindfully take in the autumn views\, allowing the falling foliage to inspire you to: let go. \nLetting go of what is not serving us and what is out of our control is the goal. As you arrive at the green along Auburn lake\, chairs will be set up for a chair yoga class. \nThe chair allows a great view to gaze upon the lake as Lonnie guides participants through this moving meditation. The class will center generous exhales and prompt you to release unnecessary tension in the body and mind. The return walk to the chapel provides opportunity for reflection\, considering what small practice could stay with you and remind you to let go. \nPlease note that this workshop will meet at and return to Story Chapel. \n… \nLonnie has taught chair yoga for 9 years weekly. Throughout their 30s as an active dancer\, she has felt the benefits of this gentle practice and feels it is beneficial for many ages and mobilities. \nA note from Lonnie: “As a past artist in residence who choreographed a dance tour around Auburn Lake\, I grew to know this corner of the cemetery quite well. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Mount Auburn’s Community Science Fair\, where biodiversity research leaders will share their work at interactive stations inside Bigelow Chapel. Attendees will have the chance to meet local experts\, learn about ongoing projects\, and discover how to get involved in supporting urban ecology. \nAs one of the largest green spaces in the area\, Mount Auburn is home to a wide range of species. But urbanization and climate change threaten wildlife through habitat loss\, fragmentation\, and pollution. In response\, we are working to improve habitat\, increase both plant and animal diversity\, and monitor the many species that visit and reside on our grounds. \nThrough partnerships with local scientists\, Mount Auburn conducts 18 ongoing observation-based field projects and offers a citizen science naturalist program that trains volunteers to support biodiversity research.
