DESCRIPTION:The fall migration of the Common Nighthawk is a predictable and visible phenomenon and the top of Washington Tower is the perfect place to view it.  Despite the name\, Nighthawks are a member of the nightjar family and in late August\, early September can be spotted on the horizon or overhead migrating south or wheeling around at dusk catching insects when they pause along their migration route to fuel up. In addition to searching for Nighthawks we will be on the lookout for raptors\, songbirds\, chimney swifts and even bats after sunset.  Led by Brian Rusnica\, President\, Eastern Mass Hawk Watch.\n\nWe’ll meet at Asa Gray Garden (Lawn Avenue Circle) and caravan to Washington Tower. Bring Binoculars and a flashlight. Space is limited\, Registration required.\n\nAccessibility Note: This event takes place at the top of Washington Tower. There are 96 steps to the top and an additional 12 steps from Mountain Ave to the base of the tower. DESCRIPTION:An outdoor Guided Meditation\, Relaxation and Sound Experience. \n\n\n\nSound Healing practitioner Marlene Boyette welcomes all to be held by the earth\, to find refuge\, to rest\, and to be led through a guided meditation intended to bring the mind and the body into unison\, while also engaging the senses. Weaving together the sounds\, vibrations\, and energy of our natural surroundings with a variety of instruments (including deeply resonant crystal and metal singing bowls and chimes)\, participants will be bathed in layered sonic acoustics. \nThe experience will close with an opportunity for all to reflect and set intentions for the new season through dialogue and / or journaling. \nWhat to bring: a yoga mat or blanket to sit on. SUMMARY:Outdoor Watercolor & Sketch Class
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mount Auburn for an outdoor watercolor class\, taking in the beauty of the landscape and learning about watercolor composition. \n\n\n\n\nTaking in the beauty of Mount Auburn Cemetery\, we will take a short 5-minute walk from Story Chapel (across from the front entrance of the Cemetery) to a spot where you will choose your composition. You will learn how to lightly pencil in a “map” of your color-shape areas\, how to organize elements in the landscape\, how to find spatial planes\, then how to slowly build up layers of translucent watercolors to create space and depth while imbuing your watercolor with a beautiful sense of light. \nStudents who don’t bring watercolors may still take part in this class by sketching or drawing the scenes around you with instruction. Clipboards with paper and pencils will be provided. \nThere will also be folding chairs to sit on at the class location. \nRecommended: Bring a bottle of drinking water\, and supplies from the list below. \nBathrooms and a water bottle filling station are located at the meeting location\, near Story Chapel. Use these before we head out on our walk and to our class location. \n… \nThis class will be taught by Amanda Annis. Amanda loves teaching and taught for 20 years at the Boston Center for Adult Education\, including classes in figurative clay sculpture\, watercolor and drawing\, and continued teaching in her own studio. DESCRIPTION:Beginning in 1831\, Cemetery founders laid out roads and paths to enhance the hills and valleys among the natural woodland. Seven distinct hills\, nestled in its center\, were marked as significant features on the earliest maps of the Cemetery. \n\n\nThis 75-minute walk will explore the history and key features of each hill and the paths that traverse them. On Mount Auburn\, the highest hill\, a climb up Washington Tower will be optional. \nGood walking shoes are highly recommended. Some paths may have loose vegetation and are a bit steep in spots. \nAbout Your Guide: \nSteve Friedman\, Mount Auburn docent\, will lead the walk. Steve has been a Welcome Center volunteer for over two years. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a poetry-focused international concert series with composers Mary Bichner (former Artist-in-Residence) and Christina Goh. \n\n\n\n\n“Rencontres Poétiques: Poetic Encounters” is a poetry-focused international concert series created by composer and former Artist-in-Residence Mary Bichner [USA] and Christina Goh [France]. The series features musical settings composed by Bichner and Goh for classic poems in both French and English; inspired by the works of Phillis Wheatley\, Ovid\, Edgar Allan Poe\, Benjamin Franklin\, Emily Dickinson\, and more. Each version of the concert is customized to the venue and city in which it is performed\, often with works either hand-selected or newly-composed for the occasion. \nThe concert is part of a four-city international tour of Rencontres Poétiques that will also include performances in Urval\, France (November 20th); Casseneuil\, France (November 21st); and Semblançay\, France (November 25th – more details to be announced soon). DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mount Auburn for a concert that celebrates the third homecoming of the Bigelow Chapel pipe organ* after it was decommissioned by Mount Auburn and reformed by Eden as a new multi-component instrument called Argent and Sable**. \nThe performance includes amplified cello with vocals\, electronics\, and Eden’s band featuring Daniel Gordevich (bass guitar) and AJ Grimes (drums)\, Eden’s original compositions including “Aboriginal Sensible Muchness” which she wrote as her first piece as an artist-in residence\, plus several newer songs inspired by the Cemetery and spending time with her friend Roy Hawes\, the Cemetery’s Operations Manager. \nThe performance will feature a new arco-electroacoustic percussion instrument (2026) created from one of the remaining flute pipes of the Bigelow Chapel organ. \nShe will perform and recite her 2025 musical death awareness meditation “Nox Obscura\,” which explores collective grief\, reinvention\, ritual\, subversion\, and the dark night of the soul. \nAttendees are encouraged to listen\, meditate\, and immerse in the cacophonous sound of Argent & Sable. “The Cemetery Tapes\,” a live performance album recorded in Bigelow Chapel featuring the death meditation “Lux Aeterna” will be available at the event\, plus CDs and other keepsakes.*In October 1924\, a Hook & Hastings pipe organ was installed in Bigelow Chapel as part of an interior renovation by Architects Allen and Collens\, reflecting a return to a more traditional setting for funeral and memorials services. Over the next several decades\, the Cemetery received fewer requests to use the organ for services and the cost of repairs and restoration increased. In December 2022\, the organ was de-accessioned and removed from the Chapel. Today\, only the organ’s altar façade remains. \n**“Argent” refers to the silver color of the principal pipes and “sable” refers to black\, the absence of color worn in mourning. She has been an honorary fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society since 2011. She is an emerita professor of English at Hope College and a current scholar-in-residence at Brandeis University. SUMMARY:[Virtual] Archival Silences: Uncovering Queer Stories
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual panel discussion on uncovering LGBTQ+ stories in archives and historical collections. \n\n\n\n\nArchives preserve traces of the past\, but those traces are shaped by who was able to document their lives\, what institutions chose to preserve\, and the language used to describe them. For LGBTQ+ people—particularly those who lived before contemporary identities and terminology existed—the historical record can be fragmentary\, ambiguous\, or silent. \nJoin Mount Auburn Cemetery and Queer History Boston for a conversation about the challenges and possibilities of uncovering queer stories in the archives. Our panelists will consider how historians\, archivists\, artists\, and community researchers interpret the evidence that survives—and how they navigate the gaps\, uncertainties\, and assumptions that come with it. \nModerator: \nCorinne Elicona has worked at Mount Auburn for nine years in many different roles including natural burial volunteer\, administration assistant\, and crematory operator. She is currently Mount Auburn’s Associate Director of Education & Visitor Services\, working on creating educational content on Mount Auburn; its history\, landscape\, and legacy. She is passionate about fostering a positive discourse around death and promoting education around end-of-life choices and equity so that everyone can experience a good death. \n\nPanelists: \nSara Jordenö is an award-winning visual artist\, filmmaker\, curator\, and researcher based in Boston. Their interdisciplinary practice explores memory\, testimony\, collaboration\, and the ethics of representation through film\, public art\, and archival research. Jordenö is currently a 2026–27 Artist-in-Residence at Mount Auburn Cemetery\, where their project explores queer memory and the fear of erasure after death. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoan Ilacqua is the Executive Director of Queer History Boston. Through her work collecting oral histories\, preserving archival records\, and sharing personal stories\, Joan’s work ensures that communities that have been on the margins of history are centered. She serves on the Community Archives Collaborative Steering Committee and the City of Boston’s Commemoration Commission. Joan is a graduate of UMass Boston’s Public History master’s program\, and earned her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Puget Sound. In her free time\, Joan likes to read queer romance novels\, play Magic the Gathering with her wife\, and design subversive cross-stitch patterns. DESCRIPTION:Join former Artist-in-Residence Ira Klein and Liz Walker for a music and dance performance in Bigelow Chapel. \n\n\n\n\nIra Klein (2022-2023 Artist-in-Residence) returns to Mount Auburn to celebrate music from his new record\, Solo Guitar. His performance will include compositions inspired by historic oak trees on Mount Auburn’s grounds\, as well as a variety of original and traditional Middle-Eastern music. Special guest dancer/choreographer Liz Walker (2022-2023 Artist-in-Residence) will join the stage to perform select pieces from At The Seam of Life and Death\, Ira and Liz’s collaborative piece. Together\, Walker and Klein playfully explore the beautiful acoustics and space of the majestic Bigelow Chapel\, surrounding the audience with an immersive arts experience. \nLiz Walker is a classically trained ballet dancer and choreographer based in Cambridge. After completing her training at American Ballet Theatre’s school\, she joined Los Angeles Ballet as an inaugural member in 2006. With Los Angeles Ballet she performed as a soloist\, dancing a variety of roles in the classical\, Balanchine\, modern\, and contemporary repertory. As a choreographer\, Walker explores personal lived experience through movement. She uses dance as a vehicle for social commentary and change while emphasizing the medium’s strength as the embodiment of music. Walker was a 2022-2023 Artist-in-Residence at Mount Auburn Cemetery and has returned to Mount Auburn often to create and perform. She lives in Cambridge with her husband and two young children. \nIra Klein is a Brooklyn based guitarist\, composer\, and educator. Specializing in Middle-Eastern music\, American folk\, and music for dance\, he seamlessly combines a lifelong passion for musical traditions with a love of experimentation. SUMMARY:Outdoor Watercolor & Sketch Class
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mount Auburn for an outdoor watercolor class\, taking in the beauty of the landscape and learning about watercolor composition. \n\n\n\n\nTaking in the beauty of Mount Auburn Cemetery\, we will take a short 5-minute walk from Story Chapel (across from the front entrance of the Cemetery) to a spot where you will choose your composition. You will learn how to lightly pencil in a “map” of your color-shape areas\, how to organize elements in the landscape\, how to find spatial planes\, then how to slowly build up layers of translucent watercolors to create space and depth while imbuing your watercolor with a beautiful sense of light. \nStudents who don’t bring watercolors may still take part in this class by sketching or drawing the scenes around you with instruction. Clipboards with paper and pencils will be provided. \nThere will also be folding chairs to sit on at the class location. \nRecommended: Bring a bottle of drinking water\, and supplies from the list below. \nBathrooms and a water bottle filling station are located at the meeting location\, near Story Chapel. Use these before we head out on our walk and to our class location. \n… \nThis class will be taught by Amanda Annis. Amanda loves teaching and taught for 20 years at the Boston Center for Adult Education\, including classes in figurative clay sculpture\, watercolor and drawing\, and continued teaching in her own studio.
