SUMMARY:Evy in the Garden- Live Music & Theatre Performance
DESCRIPTION:A transformative performance on grief\, created by composer\, poet\, and producer\, Carolyn Surrick\, accompanied by actress Laurie O’Brien.\n\n\n\n\nThis spare and stunning new work by Carolyn Surrick is a window into a family’s grief\, a poignant reminder of the unending boundaries of love\, a vehicle for memory\, and a place where words and music meet to make room for the aching heart. \nActress Laurie O’Brien and Surrick’s viola da gamba bring to life the southern Maryland summer days that follow the sudden death of a young man. In the same way that the most beautiful and most terrible things often stand side by side\, so this quiet testament to life\, family\, and sorrow\, examines a road winding from tragedy to grace \nThis performance will be held on Friday\, July 24 at 6:00pm. Space is limited\, Ticket Required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE>>\nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. SUMMARY:Cemetery Symbolism Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Every gravestone tells a story—if you know how to read it.\n\n\n\n\n\nStep into the rich visual language of the Victorian-era cemetery and uncover the meanings hidden in Mount Auburn’s landscape that shaped 19th-century memorial art and mourning culture. \nTogether\, we’ll examine how changing attitudes toward death\, remembrance\, religion\, and nature influenced the design of monuments and landscapes in America’s garden cemeteries. Along the way\, participants will learn to “read” gravestones and memorials while gaining insight into the social and cultural values of the era. \nPerfect for newcomers and longtime cemetery enthusiasts alike\, this hour-long twilight walk offers an accessible introduction to the meanings and artistry behind cemetery symbolism. \nComfortable walking shoes recommended. \nCheck-in outside Story Chapel \n\n\n\n\n\n  \nREGISTER HERE>>\n  \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. SUMMARY:Birds of Prey at Mount Auburn
DESCRIPTION:Join licensed raptor rehabilitators Julie Anne Collier and Jim Parks as they lead a live educational program on Raptors of the Northeast. \n\n\n\n\nJulie and Jim of WINGMASTERS will introduce attendees to live birds of prey native to New England. This presentation will explain predation\, the birds’ place at the top of the food web\, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. \nTwo sessions are being offered on Sunday\, August 23 at 10:30am and1:00pm. Space is limited\, Registration required. \nPLEASE NOTE: By request of program facilitators\, this event is for ages 6 and up only. All attendees must be at least 6 years old to attend. \nCapacity: 100 people per showing \n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE>>\n… \nFor the safety of the raptors\, recording\, videotaping\, or broadcasting the program is strictly prohibited. Thank You! \nFor questions about this event\, please contact Caroline Hutchinson at chutchinson@mountauburn.org. \n… \nBirds of prey are also known as raptors\, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means “to seize”). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks\, falcons and owls\, and this presentation\, which incorporates 6-7 LIVE birds of prey\, all native to New England\, gives an overview of these different categories. The program is designed to explain predation\, the birds’ place at the top of the food web\, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number\, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that WINGMASTERS cares for\, and explains why these species face an uncertain future. \n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn.
