SUMMARY:Birds of Prey at Mount Auburn
DESCRIPTION:Join licensed raptor rehabilitators Julie Anne Collier and Jim Parks as they lead a live educational program on Raptors of the Northeast. \n\n\n\n\nJulie and Jim of WINGMASTERS will introduce attendees to live birds of prey native to New England. This presentation will explain predation\, the birds’ place at the top of the food web\, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. \nTwo sessions are being offered on Sunday\, August 23 at 10:30am and1:00pm. Space is limited\, Registration required. \nPLEASE NOTE: By request of program facilitators\, this event is for ages 6 and up only. All attendees must be at least 6 years old to attend. \nCapacity: 100 people per showing \n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE>>\n… \nFor the safety of the raptors\, recording\, videotaping\, or broadcasting the program is strictly prohibited. Thank You! \nFor questions about this event\, please contact Caroline Hutchinson at chutchinson@mountauburn.org. \n… \nBirds of prey are also known as raptors\, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means “to seize”). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks\, falcons and owls\, and this presentation\, which incorporates 6-7 LIVE birds of prey\, all native to New England\, gives an overview of these different categories. The program is designed to explain predation\, the birds’ place at the top of the food web\, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number\, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that WINGMASTERS cares for\, and explains why these species face an uncertain future. \n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. Our robust roster of programs each year is made possible by the generous support of our donors and in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. \nFor inquiries about accessibility\, to request an accommodation\, or if you have any questions about your membership\, please contact friends@mountauburn.org. \nMount Auburn is proud to participate in MCC’s Card to Culture Program. Click here to learn more. \nRefund Policy: \nRefunds and exchanges for events at Mount Auburn Cemetery are available up to 5 business days prior to the event.* Cancellations made after this deadline are not eligible for a refund and the order amount will be donated to support future programs and initiatives. \nIf Mount Auburn Cemetery decides to cancel an event\, all ticket holders will be notified and automatically refunded. \n*This policy excludes special events. Refund policies for special events will be listed directly on their event page. Exchanges are only applicable to events with multiple occurrences.

SUMMARY:Nighthawk Watch [Sold Out]
DESCRIPTION:The fall migration of the Common Nighthawk is a predictable and visible phenomenon and the top of Washington Tower is the perfect place to view it.  Despite the name\, Nighthawks are a member of the nightjar family and in late August\, early September can be spotted on the horizon or overhead migrating south or wheeling around at dusk catching insects when they pause along their migration route to fuel up. In addition to searching for Nighthawks we will be on the lookout for raptors\, songbirds\, chimney swifts and even bats after sunset.  Led by Brian Rusnica\, President\, Eastern Mass Hawk Watch.\n\nWe’ll meet at Asa Gray Garden (Lawn Avenue Circle) and caravan to Washington Tower. Bring Binoculars and a flashlight. Space is limited\, Registration required.\n\nAccessibility Note: This event takes place at the top of Washington Tower. There are 96 steps to the top and an additional 12 steps from Mountain Ave to the base of the tower.
