SUMMARY:Community Science Fair
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Mount Auburn’s Community Science Fair\, where biodiversity research leaders will share their work at interactive stations inside Story Chapel. Attendees will have the chance to meet local experts\, learn about ongoing projects\, and discover how to get involved in supporting wildlife in our community. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nAs one of the largest green spaces in the area\, Mount Auburn is home to a wide range of species. But urbanization and climate change threaten wildlife through habitat loss\, fragmentation\, and pollution. In response\, we are working to improve habitat\, increase both plant and animal diversity\, and monitor the many species that visit and reside on our grounds. \nThrough partnerships with local scientists\, Mount Auburn conducts 16 ongoing observation-based field projects and offers a citizen science naturalist program that trains volunteers to support biodiversity research. From classroom education to field training\, these programs connect people with the natural world while helping us collect vital data on native flora and fauna. \nCome learn how Mount Auburn balances the built and the wild environments within the city—and how you can be part of our efforts to sustain a healthy\, thriving landscape for generations to come. \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. SUMMARY:Indian Ridge Habitat Restoration Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Indian Ridge Path and learn about this multi-year project designed to promote wildlife habitat and biological diversity while enhancing the site’s natural beauty. \nBetween 2019-2024\, Mount Auburn’s Horticulture staff removed many invasive and unwanted plants across the area and installed 26 trees\, 2300 shrubs\, and 31\,000 perennials. \nThe tour is offered in collaboration with the Ecological Landscape Alliance. It will begin at the Visitor Center and continue along the length of the Ridge. Participants will be guided by Rie Macchiarolo\, Mount Auburn’s Director of Ornamental Horticulture\, who will share information about the design\, installation\, and management of this 2-acre woodland and wildflower meadow. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nThe walk is approximately 2/3 mile in total along a mostly flat and even terrain.  \nCheck-in will be at Story Chapel. \nCapacity: 30 people \n… \nRie Macchiarolo lives in a collective house in Somerville\, MA with a small but mighty (mostly) native garden that attracts all sorts of pollinators and smiles from strangers. As the Director of Ornamental Horticulture at Mount Auburn\, they oversee the maintenance of the ornamental gardens and natural areas in the cemetery. They collaborate with a team of directors in the Horticulture & Landscape department to maintain this landscape of exceptional beauty. Rie has been volunteering with the Ecological Landscape Alliance since 2016 and they currently serve as the board president. They love seeing wildlife interactions with new plantings\, learning new plants\, and staring deeply into the eyes of a flower! \n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. Our robust roster of programs each year is made possible by the generous support of our donors and in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. \nFor inquiries about accessibility\, to request an accommodation\, or if you have any questions about your membership\, please contact friends@mountauburn.org.
