SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:Following the model developed by Jon Underwood (based on the ideas of Bernard Crettaz)\, a Death Cafe is an opportunity for people to eat cake\, drink tea\, and discuss death. The goal is to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.” \nAt Mount Auburn’s Death Cafe\, attendees will have the opportunity to speak in small group settings and have organic and meaningful discussions on mortality. While not intended to replace direct individual support\, this guided series offers a chance to be alongside others with care\, calm and compassion. \n\n\n\nRecommended to bring: comfortable shoes\, water\, something you can easily carry to sit on such as a small mat \n\nCheck-in will be outside Story Chapel. \nEvent Capacity: 15 people \n\nREGISTER NOW >>\n\n… \n\n\nStefanie Haug\, LICSW (she/her) guides people on mindfulness ecotherapy and indigenous circle practices. SUMMARY:Deep Listening® Workshop
DESCRIPTION:How do we listen? What sounds do we notice/perceive and when? How can we change and grow our sonic focus?   \n Deep Listening® is a practice developed by Pauline Oliveros\, the late pioneering experimental music composer\, which facilitates an awareness of our attention to and relationship with sound. This practice invites us to be aware of our attention\, allowing our senses to be opened\, and enabling us to feel a greater connection to our bodies\, to others\, and to the environment.  \nJoin Deep Listening® Practitioner Nomi Epstein for a workshop consisting of a series of exercises in listening\, sonic meditation\, movement\, and imagination to open our senses to develop new ways of interacting with the world around us.  \n What to bring: comfortable clothing\, walking shoes\, a notebook & writing utensil\, a small mat or blanket to sit on (if desired). Chairs will be provided for anyone who prefers a chair to sitting on the ground.   \nREGISTER HERE >>\nCheck-in for the workshop will be outside Story Chapel (aka the Visitor Center).   \nCapacity: 15 people \nAge requirement: 16+  \n  \nPlease note: there will be changing terrain throughout the walking experience moving from pavement to gravel to grass. There will also be some small hills.   \n…  \nNOMI EPSTEIN is as an experimental music practitioner devoted to a focused listening practice. Her work embraces subtlety\, an uncovering of sounds\, and a gratitude for the daily sounds she finds around her.  \nNomi is also a composer/improvisor/curator. Her music centers around her interest in sonic fragility. Her compositions have been performed throughout the US and Europe by SurPlus\, ICE\, Wet Ink\, Mivos\, Wild Rumpus\, Dedalus\, and Southland. Her third and most recent portrait album featuring Apartment House/Vibrant Matter was released under Another Timbre (February 2024).   \nAn active practitioner and advocate of experimental music\, she is founder/director of a•pe•ri•od•ic\, the critically acclaimed\, experimental ensemble. Her curatorial work includes large scale festivals as in the Chicago area 2012 centennial John Cage Festival\, the Wandelweiser and Ustvolskaya Festivals\, and concerts across the US/abroad. She continues to research\, write\, and lecture on experimental music and serves as Associate Professor of Composition at Berklee.  \n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. Our robust roster of programs each year is made possible by the generous support of our donors and in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. \nFor inquiries about accessibility\, to request an accommodation\, or if you have any questions about your membership\, please contact friends@mountauburn.org.

Whether you are experiencing a lost past\, present or future of a relationship (human\, animal) or otherwise– you are welcome to bring and share within a small group. \nEvent Capacity: 15 people \nREGISTER NOW >>\n\n\n… \n\n\nStefanie Haug\, LICSW (she/her) guides people on mindfulness ecotherapy and indigenous circle practices. SUMMARY:Moving Through Grief to Gratitude
DESCRIPTION:“Gratitude and grief may seem to be in tension with one another\, but gratitude and loss are inseparable. Awareness of what is present calls forth what is absent.” –Oren Jay Sofer \nLed by dancer and Artist-in-Residence Lonnie Stanton\, this adult workshop is rooted in yoga\, initiating movement through intentional breathwork. Using somatic* movement techniques\, we will gain full-body awareness that focuses on your internal physical experience. All bodies are welcome! \nMovement and exercise have been known to ease tension in the body and relieve pain. Using simple physical movements and gestures\, we will gently release and exhale what weighs on us and inhale gratitude through the body. With time we will settle on mats or in chairs\, and focus on more traditional yoga sequencing. \nREGISTER NOW >>\nPlease wear clothes you are comfortable moving in and bring a mat or towel to sit on. We will have folding chairs available for those who would like to use them. Check-in will be outside Story Chapel and we will travel as a group to the workshop location at Auburn Lake. \nEvent Capacity: 15 people \nCheck-in at Story Chapel \n*Somatic movement is a gentle\, mindful\, and body-oriented practice that involves being present during movement in order to feel more connected to your body. It focuses on the internal experience and feelings connected to movement rather than pushing your body to move in a certain way. \n… \nLonnie Stanton (she/her\, they/them)\, dancer/choreographer \nLonnie Anela O’kalani Neff Stanton is a proud native Hawaiian based in Boston. She is a professional dancer\, dance educator\, and certified yoga instructor. She currently performs with Jean Appolon Expressions\, Peter DiMuro\, Lynn Modell\, and Continuum Dance. Formerly\, she worked as a performer and teacher for 10 years with Prometheus Dance. Lonnie is passionate about sharing dance in unconventional\, often outdoor spaces where a broad audience can be reached. In 2022\, she was awarded the Live Arts Boston Grant with The Click for her site-responsive augmented reality dance installation\, Emotive Land. In 2021\, she choreographed auditory movement maps for American Repertory Theater’s Arboretum Experience. Lonnie is on faculty at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and The Harvard Dance Center. \n\n\n…  \n\n\n\nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn.
