SUMMARY:Evy in the Garden
DESCRIPTION: A transformative performance on grief\, created by composer\, poet\, and producer\, Carolyn Surrick\, accompanied by actress Laurie O’Brien.\n\n\n\n\nThis spare and stunning new work by Carolyn Surrick is a window into a family’s grief\, a poignant reminder of the unending boundaries of love\, a vehicle for memory\, and a place where words and music meet to make room for the aching heart. \nActress Laurie O’Brien and Surrick’s viola da gamba bring to life the southern Maryland summer days that follow the sudden death of a young man. In the same way that the most beautiful and most terrible things often stand side by side\, so this quiet testament to life\, family\, and sorrow\, examines a road winding from tragedy to grace \nThis performance will be held on Sunday\, March 22 at 3:00pm. Space is limited\, Ticket Required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to our sponsors! \n\nW. SUMMARY:Community Science Fair
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Mount Auburn’s Community Science Fair\, where biodiversity research leaders will share their work at interactive stations inside Story Chapel. Attendees will have the chance to meet local experts\, learn about ongoing projects\, and discover how to get involved in supporting wildlife in our community. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nAs one of the largest green spaces in the area\, Mount Auburn is home to a wide range of species. But urbanization and climate change threaten wildlife through habitat loss\, fragmentation\, and pollution. In response\, we are working to improve habitat\, increase both plant and animal diversity\, and monitor the many species that visit and reside on our grounds. \nThrough partnerships with local scientists\, Mount Auburn conducts 16 ongoing observation-based field projects and offers a citizen science naturalist program that trains volunteers to support biodiversity research. From classroom education to field training\, these programs connect people with the natural world while helping us collect vital data on native flora and fauna. \nCome learn how Mount Auburn balances the built and the wild environments within the city—and how you can be part of our efforts to sustain a healthy\, thriving landscape for generations to come. \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. SUMMARY:The Hurricane That Changed Mount Auburn
DESCRIPTION:The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 (aka the Yankee Clipper or Long Island Express) was the deadliest and most damaging hurricane to ever strike New York and New England. Making landfall on September 21\, the Category 3 storm caused nearly 700 fatalities\, left 63\,000 people without homes\, and toppled 275 million trees. In Massachusetts\, storm surges measured between 18-25 feet and the hurricane’s greatest wave height of 50-feet was recorded in Gloucester. \nMount Auburn Cemetery lost more than 800 trees in a single day and over 1\,000 more suffered significant damage. Despite all the damage\, the Cemetery saw an opportunity to replant and replace what was lost while expanding and diversifying its collection. From 1939-1940 alone\, over 1\,500 new trees and shrubs were introduced to the Cemetery\, many of which are still standing today. \nJoin Jim Gorman\, arborist and MAC staff member\, for a curated tour of several of the now-mature trees planted after the hurricane. \nREGISTER HERE >>\nCheck-in at Story Chapel \nCapacity: 30 people \n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and discounts on special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. SUMMARY:Summer SOLSTICE: Community Nature Mandala
DESCRIPTION:Registration not required. Visit Asa Gray Garden to participate any time between 10:00am-5:00pm. \nJoin artist Elisabeth Gerald as she guides the Mount Auburn community and all Summer SOLSTICE participants in a healing Nature Mandala made from natural objects found at the Cemetery. \nAlso known as Land Art or Environmental Art\, Earth Art is made from organic materials found in nature like stones\, branches\, leaves\, flowers\, feathers\, pinecones\, etc. Creating a Nature Mandala (aka an Earth Art Mandala) is a meditative and often collaborative practice intended to connect you to the environment. \nMandalas\, meaning “circle” in Sanskrit\, are Buddhist devotional images that represent wholeness and are seen as a symbol for infinite connection signifying the transformation from suffering into joy. We hope that creating this Nature Mandala is a unifying and healing experience for all who participate and that it will awaken your imagination and appreciation for the natural world. \nREGISTER HERE>>\n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. Our robust roster of programs each year is made possible by the generous support of our donors and in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. \nFor inquiries about accessibility\, to request an accommodation\, or if you have any questions about your membership\, please contact friends@mountauburn.org. \nMount Auburn is proud to participate in in MCC’s Card to Culture Program.
