SUMMARY:Indian Ridge Habitat Restoration Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Indian Ridge Path and learn about this multi-year project designed to promote wildlife habitat and biological diversity while enhancing the site’s natural beauty. \nBetween 2019-2024\, Mount Auburn’s Horticulture staff removed many invasive and unwanted plants across the area and installed 26 trees\, 2300 shrubs\, and 31\,000 perennials. \nThe tour is offered in collaboration with the Ecological Landscape Alliance. It will begin at the Visitor Center and continue along the length of the Ridge. Participants will be guided by Rie Macchiarolo\, Mount Auburn’s Director of Ornamental Horticulture\, who will share information about the design\, installation\, and management of this 2-acre woodland and wildflower meadow. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nThe walk is approximately 2/3 mile in total along a mostly flat and even terrain.  \nCheck-in will be at Story Chapel. \nCapacity: 30 people \n… \nRie Macchiarolo lives in a collective house in Somerville\, MA with a small but mighty (mostly) native garden that attracts all sorts of pollinators and smiles from strangers. As the Director of Ornamental Horticulture at Mount Auburn\, they oversee the maintenance of the ornamental gardens and natural areas in the cemetery. They collaborate with a team of directors in the Horticulture & Landscape department to maintain this landscape of exceptional beauty. Rie has been volunteering with the Ecological Landscape Alliance since 2016 and they currently serve as the board president. SUMMARY:Lecture Series with Cannon Hersey and Taku Nishimae
DESCRIPTION:Cannon Hersey\, grandson of author John Hersey who wrote “Hiroshima\,” will discuss the Survivor Trees of Hiroshima\, over 160 trees within a mile of the epicenter of the atomic bombing that still thrive today. Since 2015 during 31 journeys to Hiroshima\, Hersey has documented over 60 of these trees with 35mm photography. Within an interactive discussion\, Hersey and Peabody award-winning filmmaker Taku Nishimae will share clips from the movie “SURVIVOR TREES Hiroshima Revealed III\,” and photographs as well as large scale silkscreens of these survivor trees. Hersey and Nishimae will also discuss their work as creatives and educators convening diverse\, multi-generational audiences\, to look at disruptive ways to tackle a range of environmental\, community\, and human rights issues to engage issues important to local residents and the world. \nREGISTER NOW >>\nCannon Hersey is a media entrepreneur\, visual artist\, filmmaker and organizer of large-scale cultural platforms in New York City\, São Paulo\, Miami\, Tokyo\, Houston\, Hiroshima and Johannesburg. Hersey founded the nonprofit CrossPathCulture (CPC) in 1999 and 1Future in 2015\, both organizations dedicated to global community building through the arts\, global diversity in museums and media\, and art as a language of social transformation. \nTaku Nishimae is an award-winning producer of films\, documentaries\, TV\, and live performances.
