SUMMARY:[Virtual] Archival Silences: Uncovering Queer Stories
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual panel discussion on uncovering LGBTQ+ stories in archives and historical collections. \n\n\n\n\nArchives preserve traces of the past\, but those traces are shaped by who was able to document their lives\, what institutions chose to preserve\, and the language used to describe them. For LGBTQ+ people—particularly those who lived before contemporary identities and terminology existed—the historical record can be fragmentary\, ambiguous\, or silent. \nJoin Mount Auburn Cemetery and Queer History Boston for a conversation about the challenges and possibilities of uncovering queer stories in the archives. Our panelists will consider how historians\, archivists\, artists\, and community researchers interpret the evidence that survives—and how they navigate the gaps\, uncertainties\, and assumptions that come with it. \nModerator: \nCorinne Elicona has worked at Mount Auburn for nine years in many different roles including natural burial volunteer\, administration assistant\, and crematory operator. She is currently Mount Auburn’s Associate Director of Education & Visitor Services\, working on creating educational content on Mount Auburn; its history\, landscape\, and legacy. She is passionate about fostering a positive discourse around death and promoting education around end-of-life choices and equity so that everyone can experience a good death. \n\nPanelists: \nSara Jordenö is an award-winning visual artist\, filmmaker\, curator\, and researcher based in Boston. Their interdisciplinary practice explores memory\, testimony\, collaboration\, and the ethics of representation through film\, public art\, and archival research. Jordenö is currently a 2026–27 Artist-in-Residence at Mount Auburn Cemetery\, where their project explores queer memory and the fear of erasure after death. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoan Ilacqua is the Executive Director of Queer History Boston. Through her work collecting oral histories\, preserving archival records\, and sharing personal stories\, Joan’s work ensures that communities that have been on the margins of history are centered. She serves on the Community Archives Collaborative Steering Committee and the City of Boston’s Commemoration Commission. Joan is a graduate of UMass Boston’s Public History master’s program\, and earned her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Puget Sound. In her free time\, Joan likes to read queer romance novels\, play Magic the Gathering with her wife\, and design subversive cross-stitch patterns. You can learn more about Joan’s work at ilacquajoan.com. \nHilary Clifford has been working as an archivist for over 10 years and came to Mount Auburn Cemetery as the Digital Archivist for the Historical Collections and Archives in February of 2026. Most recently she was head archivist for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation in Los Angeles and served on the Advisory Committee for The LGBT Community Center Archives in New York. Originally from Grafton\, MA\, she is excited to be back in her home state and working at such an important cultural institution. \nREGISTER HERE>>\n  \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. DESCRIPTION:Join author\, Natalie Dykstra\, and Curator\, Meg Winslow\, to learn about the life and legacy of Isabella Stewart Gardner \n\n\n\n\nMount Auburn Cemetery will host a conversation between Natalie Dykstra\, author of Chasing Beauty: The Life of Isabella Stewart Gardner\, and Meg Winslow\, Senior Curator of Historical Collections & Archives at Mount Auburn Cemetery this October. \nA presentation on the research and writing process of Chasing Beauty will be followed by a conversation on collaboration with Mount Auburn and what makes a biography come alive. \nAbout Chasing Beauty: The Life of Isabella Stewart Gardner by Natalie Dykstra \nThe vivid and masterful story of Isabella Stewart Gardner—creator of one of America’s most stunning museums—an American original whose own life was remade by art. Includes archival photos of Isabella’s world\, museum\, and the art she collected. \nAn extraordinary achievement of storytelling and scholarship\, Chasing Beauty illuminates the fascinating ways the museum and its holdings can be seen as a kind of memoir\, dazzling and haunting\, created with objects instead of words and displayed per Isabella’s wishes in the exact placements she initially curated. \nFrom award-winning author Natalie Dykstra\, Chasing Beauty is the story of the complex and singular woman behind one of the most fascinating museums in the nation and the world—a tale of beauty and loss\, grit and American self-invention. \nAbout Natalie Dykstra \nNatalie Dykstra is the author of Clover Adams: A Gilded and Heartbreaking Life\, which won a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellowship and was a finalist for the 2013 Massachusetts Book Award. Her recent book Chasing Beauty: The Life of Isabella Stewart Gardner has received a New England Society of New York Book Award and the Marfield Prize\, the national award for arts writing. Her work has been supported by a Public Scholars grant from the NEH and an inaugural Robert and Ina Caro Research Fellowship from the Biographers International Organization. She has been an honorary fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society since 2011. She is an emerita professor of English at Hope College and a current scholar-in-residence at Brandeis University. SUMMARY:What Monuments Remember — and What They Forget: A Juneteenth Walk
DESCRIPTION:**This tour has been cancelled due to inclement weather**\n\n\n\n\nWhat do monuments teach us about slavery\, emancipation\, and the long struggle for civil rights? \n\n\n\n\nIn honor of Juneteenth\, join us at Mount Auburn Cemetery for a walking tour that explores how public memory is constructed in stone\, landscape\, and story. \nJuneteenth\, now a national holiday\, commemorates June 19\, 1865\, when Union troops arrived in Texas to enforce the freedom promised by the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier—revealing the gap between the declaration of freedom and its lived reality. \nThis tour explores the lives and memorials of individuals connected to the long struggle for freedom and civil rights\, including authors\, abolitionists\, activists\, and political leaders. As we move through the cemetery landscape\, we’ll also examine how monuments shape public memory—sometimes clarifying the past\, and sometimes simplifying it. \n\n\n\n\n  \nREGISTER HERE>>\n  \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. Our robust roster of programs each year is made possible by the generous support of our donors and in part by theMassachusetts Cultural Council. \nFor inquiries about accessibility\, to request an accommodation\, or if you have any questions about your membership\, please contact friends@mountauburn.org. \nMount Auburn is proud to participate in MCC’s Card to Culture Program. Click here to learn more. \nRefund Policy: \nRefunds and exchanges for events at Mount Auburn Cemetery are available up to 5 business days prior to the event.* Cancellations made after this deadline are not eligible for a refund and the order amount will be donated to support future programs and initiatives. \nIf Mount Auburn Cemetery decides to cancel an event\, all ticket holders will be notified and automatically refunded. \n*This policy excludes special events. SUMMARY:Legends of the Revolution: Poetical Myth-Making in the 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:Literary historian Rob Velella explores how 19th-century writers turned the American Revolution into an enduring national legend.\n\n\n\nIn honor of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and National Poetry Month\, literary historian Rob Velella examines how 19th-century writers looked back on the Revolution and interpreted it for future generations.
