DESCRIPTION:“Death is for the living and not for the dead so much.” – Floyd McClure in Gates of Heaven  \nThe Coolidge returns to Mount Auburn Cemetery to present our popular Cemetery Cinema outdoor film program! \nREGISTER ON THE COOLIDGE WEBSITE HERE >>\nTickets $40 for double feature. \nThis incredibly unique screening experience will take place at sunset on Tuesday\, August 26 at the historic and beautiful Mount Auburn Cemetery. (Rain date: Wednesday\, August 27). \nThe evening begins with the area premiere of a new 4K restoration of The Sweet Hereafter\, Atom Egoyan’s Oscar-nominated adaptation of Russell Banks’ novel about a small town reeling from a devastating tragedy. Our second feature is Errol Morris’ incredible debut documentary Gates of Heaven\, which examines the devotions\, emotions and at times\, obsessions exhibited by animal lovers when a pet cemetery is moved to a new location. Both sincere and satirical\, the film is an endlessly surprising and often funny look at how we grieve. \nMount Auburn Cemetery is located 580 Mount Auburn Street in Cambridge. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased on the Coolidge Corner Theatre website. Parking will be available at the cemetery\, and light concessions will be sold. Chairs\, blankets\, and snacks are encouraged\, but no alcohol\, please. Mount Auburn Cemetery is an active burial place and a sacred site to mourners. Please keep this in mind as you set up your seating space and refrain from touching or leaning against any of the monuments or headstones. \nThe seating area is an uneven grassy field surrounded by monuments and gravestones. A big-city lawyer (Ian Holm) arrives to help the survivors’ and victims’ families prepare a class-action suit\, but his efforts only seem to push the townspeople further apart. At the same time\, one teenage survivor of the accident (Sarah Polley) has to reckon with the loss of innocence brought about by a different kind of damage \nAbout Gates of Heaven\nErrol Morris burst out of the gate with this brilliant debut feature\, about two pet cemeteries in Northern California and the people involved with them. Such a description\, however\, can hardly do justice to the captivating\, funny\, and enigmatic Gates of Heaven\, a film that is about our relationships to our pets\, each other\, and ourselves. Both sincere and satirical\, this is an endlessly surprising study of human nature.

SUMMARY:Deep Listening Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Deep Listening encourages us to drop into presence with ourselves and with others. This practice (described by composer Pauline Oliveros as “listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear”) can become a way of being in a new kind of relation to ourselves and our environments. Through this multi-sensory practice of attunement to sound\, stillness\, breath and movement\, Deep Listening can help foster profound experiences of emotional catharsis and processing. \nIn this Deep Listening experience\, participants will be guided through an hour-long musical meditation led by 25-26 Artist-in-Residence Lia Pikus. In the quiet comfort of Mount Auburn’s Hazel Dell\, Lia will use her cello and loop pedal^ to guide participants through a Deep Listening ritual that will help to foster our relationship with impermanence through attunement to the natural world. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nParticipants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, blanket\, pillow\, or anything else you can sit or lay on comfortably. She is a cellist\, composer\, and illustrator whose practice centers on art’s ability to cultivate experiences of presence and connection\, both within community and in dialogue with the natural world. By drawing and reflecting on natural processes\, Lia seeks to help audiences make emotional and sensory connections with their environments. As a Thomas J. Watson fellow (2023)\, she researched this connective power on a global scale\, exploring the role of art in fostering community around the world. This research formed the foundation for her current explorations in live looping as a form of mediative ritual. It is also the central focus of her debut EP\, Ritual\, released in 2024. Lia was an Artist-in-Residence at Shenandoah National Park in 2024 and at Mothership NYC in 2023. This year\, Stan’s uplifting musical performance will feature dance accompaniment by former Mount Auburn Artist-in-Residence Lonnie Stanton. The event will begin with a reception in Asa Gray Garden\, 5:30-6:30 p.m.\, with the performance beginning at 6:30 PM just across the way in Hazel Dell. \nStan Strickland is a vocalist\, saxophonist\, and flutist\, and is the leader of Stan Strickland & Ascension\, and the Stan Strickland Trio. SUMMARY:Sensing Mount Auburn: A Landscape in Motion
DESCRIPTION:Mount Auburn Cemetery is not a static repository of memory but a living\, evolving landscape shaped by movement\, perception\, and time. Sensing Mount Auburn: A Landscape in Motion presents the work of 24-25 Artists-in-Residence\, Yufan Gao and Adam Molinski\, in dialogue with a design studio they led at the Boston Architectural College. The work reimagines Mount Auburn through sensory engagement and experimental design methodologies.  \nOver the course of their residency\, Gao and Molinski conducted meditative walks across the seasons\, using devices and exercises created to disrupt habitual ways of seeing. These walks activated a multisensory awareness of the landscape\, revealing how scent\, touch\, and sound can evoke memory and deepen spatial perception.  \nThis exhibition will showcase the data collected from the Sensing Mount Auburn walks including abstract drawings\, written impressions\, and marks left by participants. It will also display BAC student works that investigate Mount Auburn’s literary\, planar\, and sectional layers through archival collage\, binaural film\, motion mapping\, and sectional analysis.   \nSensing Mount Auburn: A Landscape in Motion transforms Bigelow Chapel into a multi-sensory abstracted experience of the cemetery\, offering a dynamic understanding of the landscape. The power of these senses lies in their ability to evoke emotions and recollections\, creating a deeper and more intimate connection with our surroundings. The traveling multi-screen exhibit evokes the contemporaneous life force of diverse individuals interred at Mount Auburn from its consecration in 1831 to the present. \nAfter finishing his residency at Mount Auburn\, Roberto went on to create and host the PBS series\, World’s Greatest Cemeteries. The TV show premiered in October 2021 and episode #1 focuses on Mount Auburn Cemetery right here in Cambridge\, MA! Since then\, the show has traveled to France\, England\, Hollywood and New York. \nHow did this all come about\, and why does Roberto credit Mount Auburn with convincing him that a whole nation might watch a series about graveyards? Find out at this one-night-only event where Roberto shares his journey from Cambridge to becoming “that cemetery guy” on PBS. SUMMARY:Plucked From Earth To Bloom
DESCRIPTION:Join 24-25 Artist-in-Residence Markel Uriu for a special one-day only exhibit of her original artwork\, Plucked From Earth to Bloom.  \nPlucked From Earth to Bloom is a portrait of Mount Auburn that explores the Cemetery’s history and ecology through images of the physical landscape. The artwork is a large two-dimensional paper-weaving created from images sourced from Mount Auburn’s Historical Collections & Archives\, satellite imagery\, and photographs taken by the artist over the course of a year. The images were compiled and woven together to create an abstract map of the space that seeks to obscure and highlight various aspects of the Cemetery.  \nThe paper-weaving explores the ways in which time is compressed in the physical world\, and highlights the way plants\, materials\, objects\, human and nonhuman beings hold contexts that reveal deeper truths about the history of the Cemetery.  \nThe artwork will be displayed in the contemporary glass wing of Bigelow Chapel. There will be a Q&A with the artist and Public Events Producer\, Julie-Anne Whitney\, at 1:00pm. Light snacks and drinks will be provided.  \nRegistration is not required for this event. If you reserve a free ticket then that will help us gauge the interest in the event.  \n…  \nMarkel Uriu is a 24-25 Artist in Residence at Mount Auburn Cemetery. She is an interdisciplinary artist based in Cambridge\, MA earning her master’s in landscape architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design (2025). Her work explores impermanence\, maintenance\, and the unseen. Drawing from her Japanese and Irish-American heritage\, she is particularly interested in liminal spaces\, and explores these concepts through research\, ephemeral botanical narratives\, installations\, and two-dimensional work. Her current work investigates the ways we view ourselves in relationship to other humans\, species\, and ecosystems and how it manifests in our landscapes. Markel is the recipient of various awards and residencies\, including the Penny White Project Fund at Harvard Graduate School of Design\, Cambridge\, MA\, the 4Culture Amazon Artist in Residence\, Seattle\, WA and the 4Culture Artist Grant\, Seattle\, WA.

DESCRIPTION:This February\, the Laurel Circle Concert Series will return with a performance by the Rasa String Quartet. Escape the cold for an evening filled with music\, food\, and good company inside the warmth of our historic Bigelow Chapel.\n\n\n\nFormed in 2019\, the Boston-based Rasa String Quartet consists of violinists Emma Powell and Maura Shawn Scanlin\, violist Kiyoshi Hayashi\, and cellist Mina Kim\, who are graduates of the New England Conservatory\, the Shepherd School of Music\, and Yale University.\n\n\n\nAs with all Laurel Circle Lectures and Concerts\, the program will begin with an hour-long reception\, followed by an hour of performance.
