SUMMARY:Rencontres Poétiques: Poetic Encounters Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a poetry-focused international concert series with composers Mary Bichner (former Artist-in-Residence) and Christina Goh. \n\n\n\n\n“Rencontres Poétiques: Poetic Encounters” is a poetry-focused international concert series created by composer and former Artist-in-Residence Mary Bichner [USA] and Christina Goh [France]. The series features musical settings composed by Bichner and Goh for classic poems in both French and English; inspired by the works of Phillis Wheatley\, Ovid\, Edgar Allan Poe\, Benjamin Franklin\, Emily Dickinson\, and more. Each version of the concert is customized to the venue and city in which it is performed\, often with works either hand-selected or newly-composed for the occasion. \nThe concert is part of a four-city international tour of Rencontres Poétiques that will also include performances in Urval\, France (November 20th); Casseneuil\, France (November 21st); and Semblançay\, France (November 25th – more details to be announced soon). SUMMARY:The Return: Eden Rayz and Argent & Sable- A Death Aware Musical Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mount Auburn for a concert that celebrates the third homecoming of the Bigelow Chapel pipe organ* after it was decommissioned by Mount Auburn and reformed by Eden as a new multi-component instrument called Argent and Sable**. \nThe performance includes amplified cello with vocals\, electronics\, and Eden’s band featuring Daniel Gordevich (bass guitar) and AJ Grimes (drums)\, Eden’s original compositions including “Aboriginal Sensible Muchness” which she wrote as her first piece as an artist-in residence\, plus several newer songs inspired by the Cemetery and spending time with her friend Roy Hawes\, the Cemetery’s Operations Manager. \nThe performance will feature a new arco-electroacoustic percussion instrument (2026) created from one of the remaining flute pipes of the Bigelow Chapel organ. \nShe will perform and recite her 2025 musical death awareness meditation “Nox Obscura\,” which explores collective grief\, reinvention\, ritual\, subversion\, and the dark night of the soul. \nAttendees are encouraged to listen\, meditate\, and immerse in the cacophonous sound of Argent & Sable. “The Cemetery Tapes\,” a live performance album recorded in Bigelow Chapel featuring the death meditation “Lux Aeterna” will be available at the event\, plus CDs and other keepsakes.*In October 1924\, a Hook & Hastings pipe organ was installed in Bigelow Chapel as part of an interior renovation by Architects Allen and Collens\, reflecting a return to a more traditional setting for funeral and memorials services. Over the next several decades\, the Cemetery received fewer requests to use the organ for services and the cost of repairs and restoration increased. In December 2022\, the organ was de-accessioned and removed from the Chapel. Today\, only the organ’s altar façade remains. \n**“Argent” refers to the silver color of the principal pipes and “sable” refers to black\, the absence of color worn in mourning. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this walking tour exploring the enigmatic art-collector\, Isabella Stewart Gardner and her artistic contemporaries. \n\n\n\n\nIsabella Stewart Gardner (1840–1924) amassed a world-class art collection and became a legend in her adopted city of Boston. This walking tour\, led by cemetery docent and Gardner Museum volunteer Robin Hazard Ray\, will visit Gardner’s family mausoleum and the burial places of many in her luminary circle of acquaintance\, including Julia Ward Howe\, Charles Eliot Norton\, and William Sturgis Bigelow. Along the way\, we’ll explore the life\, times\, and mind of this dynamic Bostonian. \nAbout Your Guide: \nRobin Hazard Ray is a historian\, crime fiction writer\, editor\, and cemetery tour guide. Her writings have been published in the Boston Herald\, the MIT News\, Quaker History\, Italian Americana\, Mystery Magazine\, and elsewhere. Her two historical mystery novels\, The Strangers’ Tomb and The Soldiers’ Rest\, and her recent collection Clay and Other Cemetery Stories are set in and around Mount Auburn Cemetery in the 19th century. She volunteers with the horticulture department of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, helping tend the plants in the courtyard. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mount Auburn for an outdoor watercolor class\, taking in the beauty of the landscape and learning about watercolor composition. \n\n\n\n\nTaking in the beauty of Mount Auburn Cemetery\, we will take a short 5-minute walk from Story Chapel (across from the front entrance of the Cemetery) to a spot where you will choose your composition. You will learn how to lightly pencil in a “map” of your color-shape areas\, how to organize elements in the landscape\, how to find spatial planes\, then how to slowly build up layers of translucent watercolors to create space and depth while imbuing your watercolor with a beautiful sense of light. \nStudents who don’t bring watercolors may still take part in this class by sketching or drawing the scenes around you with instruction. Clipboards with paper and pencils will be provided. \nThere will also be folding chairs to sit on at the class location. \nRecommended: Bring a bottle of drinking water\, and supplies from the list below. \nBathrooms and a water bottle filling station are located at the meeting location\, near Story Chapel. DESCRIPTION: Join former Artist-in-Residence Lonnie Stanton for a mindful workshop at Auburn Lake.\n\n\n\n\nJoin former Artist-in-Residence Lonnie Stanton for a meditative walk and chair yoga class at Mount Auburn. This adult workshop is rooted in yoga\, initiating movement through intentional breathwork. All bodies are welcome. You will explore the gorgeous natural setting with a warming walk to the lake. As you travel along Indian Ridge\, participants will be prompted to mindfully take in the autumn views\, allowing the falling foliage to inspire you to: let go. \nLetting go of what is not serving us and what is out of our control is the goal. As you arrive at the green along Auburn lake\, chairs will be set up for a chair yoga class. \nThe chair allows a great view to gaze upon the lake as Lonnie guides participants through this moving meditation. The class will center generous exhales and prompt you to release unnecessary tension in the body and mind. The return walk to the chapel provides opportunity for reflection\, considering what small practice could stay with you and remind you to let go. \nPlease note that this workshop will meet at and return to Story Chapel. \n… \nLonnie has taught chair yoga for 9 years weekly. Throughout their 30s as an active dancer\, she has felt the benefits of this gentle practice and feels it is beneficial for many ages and mobilities. \nA note from Lonnie: “As a past artist in residence who choreographed a dance tour around Auburn Lake\, I grew to know this corner of the cemetery quite well. It feels like a second home. I am thrilled for the opportunity to return and share my love of this path with others. Autumn is such a stunning time in New England.
