SUMMARY:Legends of the Revolution: Poetical Myth-Making in the 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:Literary historian Rob Velella explores how 19th-century writers turned the American Revolution into an enduring national legend.\n\n\n\nIn honor of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and National Poetry Month\, literary historian Rob Velella examines how 19th-century writers looked back on the Revolution and interpreted it for future generations. Through poetry\, essays\, and popular literature\, these authors reshaped revolutionary figures and events into moral symbols and cultural myths that still influence how we understand the nation’s founding today. \nThe tour will highlight writers buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery and situates their work within a broader literary movement that used imagination and memory to construct a usable past. \n\n\n\n\n  \nREGISTER HERE>>\n  \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. SUMMARY:Evy in the Garden
DESCRIPTION: A transformative performance on grief\, created by composer\, poet\, and producer\, Carolyn Surrick\, accompanied by actress Laurie O’Brien.\n\n\n\n\nThis spare and stunning new work by Carolyn Surrick is a window into a family’s grief\, a poignant reminder of the unending boundaries of love\, a vehicle for memory\, and a place where words and music meet to make room for the aching heart. \nActress Laurie O’Brien and Surrick’s viola da gamba bring to life the southern Maryland summer days that follow the sudden death of a young man. In the same way that the most beautiful and most terrible things often stand side by side\, so this quiet testament to life\, family\, and sorrow\, examines a road winding from tragedy to grace \nThis performance will be held on Sunday\, March 22 at 3:00pm. Space is limited\, Ticket Required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to our sponsors! \n\nW. SUMMARY:Deep Listening Ritual with Artist in Residence Lia Pikus
DESCRIPTION:Participants will be guided through an hour-long musical meditation led by 25-26 Artist-in-Residence Lia Pikus. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nDeep Listening encourages us to drop into presence with ourselves and with others. This practice (described by composer Pauline Oliveros as “listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear”) can become a way of being in a new kind of relation to ourselves and our environments. Through this multi-sensory practice of attunement to sound\, stillness\, breath and movement\, Deep Listening can help foster profound experiences of emotional catharsis and processing. \nIn this Deep Listening experience\, participants will be guided through an hour-long musical meditation led by 25-26 Artist-in-Residence Lia Pikus. In the quiet comfort of Mount Auburn’s Hazel Dell\, Lia will use her cello and loop pedal^ to guide participants through a Deep Listening ritual that will help to foster our relationship with impermanence through attunement to the natural world. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, blanket\, pillow\, or anything else you can sit or lay on comfortably. There will also be chairs available. \nCheck-in at the top of Hazel Dell ramp (along Central Ave). \nLocation: Hazel Dell \nCap: 40 people \n*Please Note: Lia Pikus is not a certified Deep Listening practitioner. \n^Loop pedals are used to record and “loop” musical sounds or patterns in order to add layers\, textures\, and backing tracks. \n… \nLIA PIKUS is one of Mount Auburn’s 25-26 Artists-in-Residence. She is a cellist\, composer\, and illustrator whose practice centers on art’s ability to cultivate experiences of presence and connection\, both within community and in dialogue with the natural world. By drawing and reflecting on natural processes\, Lia seeks to help audiences make emotional and sensory connections with their environments. As a Thomas J. Watson fellow (2023)\, she researched this connective power on a global scale\, exploring the role of art in fostering community around the world. This research formed the foundation for her current explorations in live looping as a form of mediative ritual. It is also the central focus of her debut EP\, Ritual\, released in 2024. Lia was an Artist-in-Residence at Shenandoah National Park in 2024 and at Mothership NYC in 2023. She is currently pursuing a Masters in Religion\, Ethics\, and Politics at Harvard University. www.liapikus.com \n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. SUMMARY:Colonial Revival Cemetery Symbolism Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Education & Digital Content Manager Corinne Elicona on an exploration of Mount Auburn’s Colonial Revival gravestone monuments. \n  \nAfter the 1876 Centennial\, the United States saw a revival of it’s colonial past. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nThe Colonial Revival Movement was a national expression of early North American culture\, primarily the built and artistic environments of the east coast colonies. The influence of this movement even reached the nation’s cemeteries\, which saw an increase of colonial-era gravestone motifs called Memento Mori and a resurgence in the use of slate for monuments. \nAs we look back on the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, we will explore this unique era and style and see how it compares to its inspiration found in the early colonial burial grounds of New England. \n  \nCorinne Elicona has worked at Mount Auburn for eight years in many different roles including natural burial volunteer\, administration assistant\, and crematory operator. She is currently Mount Auburn’s Education & Digital Content Manager\, working on creating educational content on Mount Auburn; its history\, landscape\, and legacy. She is passionate about fostering a positive discourse around death and promoting education around end-of-life choices and equity so that everyone can experience a good death. \n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. SUMMARY:Therapeutic Art Workshop: Collaging to Process Grief
DESCRIPTION:Grief is a complex and multifaceted experience which includes a wide range of emotions. The collage process provides us with an intuitive way to explore this complexity and nuance as we sort through images and words\, choosing those that are most resonant to us and creating narratives from assembling the disparate pieces together. In this therapeutic art workshop\, we’ll discuss different forms of grief and how artists have used collage in their art about loss. Next participants will be provided a range of art materials and guided in creating a collage to help them explore their grief journey. We’ll conclude the workshop by sharing our art and reflections. \nParticipants will be provided with magazines and other assorted collage materials and can also opt to bring photos or photocopies of photos\, special papers\, and other ephemera. No artistic experience necessary/all skill levels are welcome. \nThis workshop will be facilitated by artist\, board-certified art therapist\, and licensed mental health counselor Dr. Lauren Leone\, who works with art therapy participants in clinical and community-based settings in Massachusetts. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nCheck in at Story Chapel \nCapacity: 20 people \n… \nRefund Policy: \nRefunds and exchanges for events at Mount Auburn Cemetery are available up to 5 business days prior to the event.* Cancellations made after this deadline are not eligible for a refund and the order amount will be donated to support future programs and initiatives. \nIf Mount Auburn Cemetery decides to cancel an event\, all ticket holders will be notified and automatically refunded. \n*This policy excludes special events. SUMMARY:Cemetery Cinema
DESCRIPTION:“Death is for the living and not for the dead so much.” – Floyd McClure in Gates of Heaven  \nThe Coolidge returns to Mount Auburn Cemetery to present our popular Cemetery Cinema outdoor film program! \nREGISTER ON THE COOLIDGE WEBSITE HERE >>\nTickets $40 for double feature. \nThis incredibly unique screening experience will take place at sunset on Tuesday\, August 26 at the historic and beautiful Mount Auburn Cemetery. (Rain date: Wednesday\, August 27). \nThe evening begins with the area premiere of a new 4K restoration of The Sweet Hereafter\, Atom Egoyan’s Oscar-nominated adaptation of Russell Banks’ novel about a small town reeling from a devastating tragedy. Our second feature is Errol Morris’ incredible debut documentary Gates of Heaven\, which examines the devotions\, emotions and at times\, obsessions exhibited by animal lovers when a pet cemetery is moved to a new location. Both sincere and satirical\, the film is an endlessly surprising and often funny look at how we grieve. \nMount Auburn Cemetery is located 580 Mount Auburn Street in Cambridge. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased on the Coolidge Corner Theatre website. Parking will be available at the cemetery\, and light concessions will be sold. Chairs\, blankets\, and snacks are encouraged\, but no alcohol\, please. Mount Auburn Cemetery is an active burial place and a sacred site to mourners. Please keep this in mind as you set up your seating space and refrain from touching or leaning against any of the monuments or headstones. \nThe seating area is an uneven grassy field surrounded by monuments and gravestones. For inquiries about accessibility\, to request an accommodation\, or if you have any questions about your membership\, please contact friends@mountauburn.org. \nAbout the Sweet Hereafter\nA small mountain community in Canada is devastated when a school bus accident leaves more than a dozen of its children dead. A big-city lawyer (Ian Holm) arrives to help the survivors’ and victims’ families prepare a class-action suit\, but his efforts only seem to push the townspeople further apart. At the same time\, one teenage survivor of the accident (Sarah Polley) has to reckon with the loss of innocence brought about by a different kind of damage \nAbout Gates of Heaven\nErrol Morris burst out of the gate with this brilliant debut feature\, about two pet cemeteries in Northern California and the people involved with them. Such a description\, however\, can hardly do justice to the captivating\, funny\, and enigmatic Gates of Heaven\, a film that is about our relationships to our pets\, each other\, and ourselves. Both sincere and satirical\, this is an endlessly surprising study of human nature.

SUMMARY:Deep Listening Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Deep Listening encourages us to drop into presence with ourselves and with others. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nParticipants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, blanket\, pillow\, or anything else you can sit or lay on comfortably. There will also be chairs available. \nCheck-in at the top of Hazel Dell ramp (along Central Ave). \nLocation: Hazel Dell \nCap: 20 people \nRain Date: Thurs\, Aug 3 at 6:00pm \n  \n*Please Note: Lia Pikus is not a certified Deep Listening practitioner. SUMMARY:Summer SOLSTICE: Community Nature Mandala
DESCRIPTION:Registration not required. Visit Asa Gray Garden to participate any time between 10:00am-5:00pm. \nJoin artist Elisabeth Gerald as she guides the Mount Auburn community and all Summer SOLSTICE participants in a healing Nature Mandala made from natural objects found at the Cemetery. \nAlso known as Land Art or Environmental Art\, Earth Art is made from organic materials found in nature like stones\, branches\, leaves\, flowers\, feathers\, pinecones\, etc. Creating a Nature Mandala (aka an Earth Art Mandala) is a meditative and often collaborative practice intended to connect you to the environment. \nMandalas\, meaning “circle” in Sanskrit\, are Buddhist devotional images that represent wholeness and are seen as a symbol for infinite connection signifying the transformation from suffering into joy. We hope that creating this Nature Mandala is a unifying and healing experience for all who participate and that it will awaken your imagination and appreciation for the natural world. \nREGISTER HERE>>\n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. DESCRIPTION:Grief to Gratitude is a site-responsive dance performance around Auburn Lake\, performed and choreographed by 24-25 Artist-in-Residence Lonnie Stanton with live musical accompaniment by Akili Jamal Haynes.  \nGrief to Gratitude explores different aspects of grief that are intrinsically tied to the human experience. The roaming performance includes five solos performed at five unique locations (note: audience members will be gently guided by a dance assistant from one location to the next). Dancer and choreographer Lonnie Stanton invites the audience to acknowledge the grief that we carry and share our feelings of gratitude to honor and heal from our grief.  \nAudience autonomy is valued. You may choose to watch the performance on your feet\, from a bench (if one is available)\, or a chair (chairs will be provided). Audience members are encouraged to bear witness to the dance’s details\, engage with the artist throughout the performance (when encouraged)\, and absorb the beautiful Mount Auburn landscape that surrounds us.  \nCheck-in for the event will be outside Story Chapel\, just inside the front gate at 580 Mt. Auburn St. in Cambridge. The audience will then be led by a Mount Auburn staff member to the performance space. The walking route starts on Central Ave and continues up Indian Ridge then down to Rosebay Ave at the southernmost point of Auburn Lake. The route includes a couple of small hills\, some paved areas\, and some stone-covered paths.   \nThe performance\, including the walk to and from the performance space will take approximately 35-45 minutes. A 15-minute Q&A with the artist will follow. \nREGISTER HERE>>\nCheck-in at Story Chapel. We will walk to the performance space as a group.  \nCapacity: 30 people per performance  \n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. Our robust roster of programs each year is made possible by the generous support of our donors and in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.  \nFor inquiries about accessibility\, to request an accommodation\, or if you have any questions about your membership\, please contact friends@mountauburn.org.  \n

SUMMARY:Sensing Mount Auburn: A Landscape in Motion
DESCRIPTION:Mount Auburn Cemetery is not a static repository of memory but a living\, evolving landscape shaped by movement\, perception\, and time. Sensing Mount Auburn: A Landscape in Motion presents the work of 24-25 Artists-in-Residence\, Yufan Gao and Adam Molinski\, in dialogue with a design studio they led at the Boston Architectural College. The work reimagines Mount Auburn through sensory engagement and experimental design methodologies.  \nOver the course of their residency\, Gao and Molinski conducted meditative walks across the seasons\, using devices and exercises created to disrupt habitual ways of seeing. These walks activated a multisensory awareness of the landscape\, revealing how scent\, touch\, and sound can evoke memory and deepen spatial perception.  \nThis exhibition will showcase the data collected from the Sensing Mount Auburn walks including abstract drawings\, written impressions\, and marks left by participants. It will also display BAC student works that investigate Mount Auburn’s literary\, planar\, and sectional layers through archival collage\, binaural film\, motion mapping\, and sectional analysis.   \nSensing Mount Auburn: A Landscape in Motion transforms Bigelow Chapel into a multi-sensory abstracted experience of the cemetery\, offering a dynamic understanding of the landscape. By reconsidering Mount Auburn as both a space of passage and a space of pause\, this exhibition asks: How do our memories inscribe themselves into space? What new rituals emerge when we experience landscape as an active\, participatory medium rather than a static backdrop?  \nBigelow Chapel \nFree to all; No registration required\n

SUMMARY:Sensing Mount Auburn
DESCRIPTION:The human body is remarkable in its ability to perceive the environment through a wide spectrum of senses. Smell\, touch\, and taste often have the strongest connections to memories\, yet we almost exclusively document the environment through visual means. The power of these senses lies in their ability to evoke emotions and recollections\, creating a deeper and more intimate connection with our surroundings. By engaging our full sensory palette\, we unlock a richer\, more immersive understanding of the world around us.  \nJoin Adam Molinski and Yufan Gao\, 2024-2025 Artists-in-Residence and landscape architecture faculty at the Boston Architectural College\, for a guided\, meditative walk that uses a series of devices and exercises to intentionally defocus participants’ familiar ways of seeing the landscape\, bringing attention to more than just the visual aspects of the landscape experience.  \nTo trace their experiences\, feelings\, conscious and subconscious thoughts\, participants will leave marks of abstract drawings and words. Collectively\, over the course of the next year\, these drawings and words will form a multi-sensory\, temporal map of Mount Auburn.  \nREGISTER HERE>>\nCheck-in at Story Chapel \nCapacity: 10 people per walk \n1pm & 4pm Walks \n… \nExperience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free or discounted access to all our public programs and special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn.
