Vulnerable Art: Historic Iron Fences at Mount Auburn Cemetery
In the early years at Mount Auburn Cemetery many proprietors chose to enclose their lots with iron fences. By the 1860’s, 1700 iron fences dotted the cemetery. People called the look, “crazy quilt.” Iron fence art was short lived. By 1871 a movement to remove them began. Today only a treasured few remain and the Cemetery is committed to preserving them. In this walk with Volunteer Docent Rosemarie Smurzynski you will visit these fences, learn a vocabulary for this art, and discover what makes these remaining fences significant.
