Learn the meanings and metaphors carved into gravestones. Find out about the transition from macabre symbols in colonial America to mammoth monuments of the Victorian era and how those transitions were a reflection of the evolving perspectives on death and the afterlife.
Elizabeth Cardaropoli is a theatre artist, funeral celebrant, historical interpreter, and grave iconography researcher. An advocate for the Green Burial and Death Positive movements she was a featured speaker at the Order of the Good Death’s Boston Death Salon in 2018 and a contributor for the Salem based Daughter’s of Darkness Festival in 2019 and 2020.
