The Victorian Contact Zone
19th Century Architecture Outside the West
Professor Keith Morgan recently returned from the Far East where he had been studying the influences of Asian and other cultures on architectural styles. In his discussion of the development of 19th-century architecture, Prof. Morgan queries – was it purely a Western invention? In what ways did the West and the non-West cross-fertilize in the development of architectural forms? Explore some of the contact zones between the developed and the developing worlds in the Victorian period by examining buildings in Africa, India, Japan, and China.
Reception at 6 PM in Bigelow Chapel, followed by the lecture.
Please RSVP throughVSA: email@example.com.
This program is co-sponsored with the Victorian Society in America/New England Chapter and the Longfellow House – Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site.
