Mount Auburn Cemetery

Cambridge, MA 02138 United States

Boston’s world-class libraries, public, private, and academic, are duly celebrated, but the librarians who made them famous are not so widely acclaimed. The first librarians of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Radcliffe College, and the Cambridge Public Library chose Mount Auburn Cemetery as their final resting place. Founders of Boston’s first free public lending libraries (at Warren Street Chapel and the Bowditch Library) and the Boston Public Library are also buried here, as are Justin Winsor, one of the founders of the American Library Association, and John Simmons, who’s namesake college has become a premier institution for education of world-class librarians. Join Volunteer DocentĀ Steve Pinkerton for this walking tour during National Library Week.

Funding for programs has been provided in part by theĀ Massachusetts Cultural Council.
