Why don’t woodpeckers sustain brain injuries from all that pecking? In this talk by Lorna Gibson (Matoula S. Salapatas Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, MIT) in Story Chapel, we’ll look at why they peck, measurements that have been made on woodpeckers in action, and even see some actual bird skulls for comparison. In this scientific discussion, we’ll get the materials science perspective on how the woodpecker brain tolerates the force of pecking.

Preregistration required. A Q&A session will follow.
