Edgar Allan Poe rises for this special appearance at Bigelow Chapel! Poe (portrayed by local literary historian Rob Velella) will be visiting four cemeteries in three states this fall. In this appearance, he will discuss his connections to various literary figures interred at Mount Auburn, as well as his own contentious relationship with Boston, the city of his birth. He will, of course, read several of his works as well.  Mary Bichner will perform her aria setting of Poe’s “To Helen”, and will provide newly-composed instrumental accompaniment as Poe recites some of his most moving works.

Rob Velella is an independent literary historian and playwright specializing in American literature of the 19th Century.  He maintains the American Literary Blog (http://www.americanliteraryblog.blogspot.com) an “almost daily celebration of important (and not-so important) dates in 19th Century American literary history.”

With one foot planted firmly in the classical world and another in the modern indie pop scene, Mary Bichner (www.marybichner.com) is able to travel effortlessly through both genres, creating pieces that enthrall classical enthusiasts and modern pop-rockers alike. She will be joined for this performance by cellist Valerie Thompson (www.golimusic.com).
