The United States did not officially enter World War I until 1917, but that did not stop Americans from supporting the Allied cause before then.  Several thousands served as medics, ambulance drivers and refugee relief workers in the American Field Service, the American Red Cross, and the YMCA.  Many of these noncombatants continued their service as soldiers in the American Expeditionary Force after America’s declaration of war.  Join volunteer docent Steve Pinkerton on a walking memorial to the AFS co-founder Henry Sleeper; AFS ambulance driver and AEF aero pilot William Channing Appleton, Jr.; husband and wife ambulance driver and hospital nurse Henry and Mary Talbot; and other heroic volunteers.
