Chapels Renamed in Honor of Founders

December 8, 2011

The “old chapel,” having never been properly named, was referred to as the “Chapel” until 1898, after which point it was then referred to as the “Crematory” or “Crematory Chapel.”  In 1936, the Cemetery’s trustees voted to name the old chapel “Bigelow Chapel” in honor of Jacob Bigelow, one of the Cemetery’s founders, second President of the Corporation, and designer of the chapel’s original plans.  It was also decided that the new chapel was to be named “Story Chapel” in honor of Justice Joseph Story, one of the Cemetery’s founders and first President of the Corporation.
